Tiger is not lucky

my take on all of this is that golf is not unlike other sports, luck is most definitely a factor

BUT

Tiger might just be good enough to take bad luck out of the equation for the "short run"

when is somebody going to step up? the talent is there for sure. Sean O' hair shot a 63 yesterday. what happened today? the media and everybody sucking up to him- chill. when his putter goes away and one day it surely will, we will see:)

[QUOTE/ Baseball is barely a sport... /QUOTE]

That's funny, back in school we would poke the baseball players by saying baseball was the only sport you started the season in shape and finished the season out of shape :p

The only thing TW, or any player for that matter, can control while putting is their speed and stroke. Once the ball leaves the putter, luck does enter into the equation. Even perfect strokes and speeds doesn't mean the putt drops, especially from distances and on bumpy greens. Tiger is probably the best (maybe ever) at maximizing what he can control, but luck (uncontrollable variables) do determine weather the ball falls on putts of say 10' or more. Given spike marks, footprints, etc., saying luck isn't involved is like saying he's the best athlete in the world ;)

When's someone going to step up? Ha. Let's see--Vijay, O'Hair, Bryant, Mahan, and Duke all broke 70! The guy shot freakin' 8 under on the weekend on a hard golf course in tough conditions! Bryant was one of the few players in TOURNAMENT HISTORY to log 4 rounds in the 60's...

By the way, he had a mediocre week for GIR's this week. He also putted like crap Thursday and Friday. And he still got it done.

The harder he works, the luckier he gets...

Doing something that is statistically improbable does NOT equal lucky. Apparently Birdieman and Jim still aren't smart enough to realize that.

The luck part is the "unlikely" single probability (long putt birdie) on any given hole.

The skill part is the "summation" of results of the previous 71 holes, that makes the 72nd hole relevant. Plus, the skill of not choking under pressure.

Any one in that tournament could birdie every hole at some time. However, only the skilled could do so with significant frequency to become the medalist.

Grabage!!!

I want to see a real challenger. I don't want to see someone beat him with regularity because he's in a putting slump. I want someone to give him a good fight when he's at his very best. That's like Tiger challenging an elderly Nicklaus or Palmer... The talent might be there, but they all lack heart. Such a powderpuff group of golfers.

yeah i know you are right they melt away

bryant didnt melt away. He had heart. You can have all the heart in the world but you will still lose to someone better than you.

vijay played great all week if you consider what he is going through. lost 18lbs from illness. Crazy swing changes that caused him to hit that thin hook into the water on 16 on saturday. Can't putt for nothing. Vijay is the closest top player mentally to Tiger, he just doesn't have the ballstriking like he used to to counteract his putting. If Mickelson had Vijay's head he would be beating Tiger sometimes.

The only way to de-rail Tiger is to make John Daly his caddie, or if hangs out with JD at the 19th hole.

Maybe THEN Tiger will slow down some (it's hard to play when you are hung over).

Don't think Tiger winning was all luck. He's been making birdies on the last hole, or next to last hole for years now.

True - no one seems to be able to challenge him, though. He simply has no equal, and that is hardly his fault. The guy has so much talent that he can be 5+ strokes back and still come back and win on any given Sunday. Few players can string together 5-6 straight holes by going birdie-birdie-par-par-birdie like Tiger can.
