Just a final thought.

What is it that the pros do with their legs then that requires the use of metal spikes?
I mean, we mere mortals all wear soft spikes now don't we?...

Yet, out of choice, a pro will always go for big basic spikes.

Surely they do this because they are generating massive downward forces during the swing and downward forces are only generated by pushing upwards with the legs, HARD...

Off topic a little, but I think the stats are down to only 25% or 30% of PGA Tour Pros using metal spikes. It's even lower for the Nationwide and mini tours. Like I said...off topic.

mj is correct regarding spike usage. I see the Darrel Surveys every week for the PGA Tour on shoe and spike counts. Metal spikes vary from 35% to 45% usage each week.

It's more of a preferance than anything. I know when i played baseball i always preferred metal spikes because i could get a better jump when i was stealing bases. The foot would dig more than slide and i had a better base to push off of with my legs.

Wouldn't the benefits of a longer vs shorter spike reveal themselves more in a horizontal plane than a vertical one?

Exactly....

Of course, but then the golf swing is not on totally vertical plane.

Try a full hard swing in ordinary trainers shoes on muddy ground to confirm that. Make sure you've got a tube of hernia cream handy....:)

New
Orginial Squat

On 23-4-1997, the golf channel academy live featuring Jim Mclean and Sam Snead, they talked about the Snead’s squat. Sam, in his words, said a guy want him to teach the Snead’s squat, he said he replied that what suits me might not suit you. But Sam just repeated that the squat move let him fire as hard as Tiger. He mentioned Tiger!
