Yeah, so all those morons who said he was building a mystique or whatever, piss off.

Wow, harsh. You sound mad.

How bout I piss on though.

Conspiracy!!

Let's all see who doesn't gush anymore than giving credit where credit is due. We will know who wants to be competitive anyway.

Indeed...;) birdie_man................... just saying........

Hehe.

...

BTW...

I can't watch The Golf Channel today anymore unless it is the stats guy, maybe Andrew Magee, and who knows who else.

Rich Learner for sure is a Tiger Autograph Collector. I like the guys who are interesting and lively but not fake with overly obvious attempts at glorifying and building of epic story.

I'm starting to like Rocco more and more now BTW. Just the right amount of humour, credit where it is due (it of course is), etc.........very little gushing!

Birdie,

Can you give me the cliff notes version of your apathy for Tiger?

Also - I really try and avoid all the worthless bs on here like blah blah blah Ben Hogan blah blah blah woman's golf but I'm not sure how much more I can take :(

I don't know what to say.

I've ranted a lot about it in here in the past.

Ultra-short version:

I root against The Patriots. I root against Roger Federer. Etc.

I actually didn't root against The Celtics the other night but I may if they win a few more years in a row.

The media makes my feelings even stronger.

Same with players gushing when they should be only giving credit where it is due (even if it's more than you'd want to give to any opponent, if it is due it is due) and being competitive. (or trying to be)

Same with seeing boring events.

This US Open was actually (of course) very good. Even though Rocco didn't pull it out it was exciting to watch. Golf will likely be more boring without Tiger I will even say. One-sided tourneys aren't exciting when they happen (this is my contention)......but generally he does add a certain excitement to any field.

I think these feelings are fairly common. You have the guys who root for the underdog/people's champ. You then have the guys who admire and root for the superstar.

Etc. etc. etc. blah blah blah women Ben Hogan Jack Nicklaus soy milk.

No more time.....I will be back later tonight mongoose.

Media

The media is certainly to blame for a lot of the hype out there, indeed. It get's super old in this ESPN, internet, wireless, reality tv world in which we live.

Perception is one thing and I'm cool with that. You want to see someone else win, someone else rise through adversity, ok cool.

I'm really only interested in the facts.

The facts are that Tiger Woods is the greatest (to date) golfer that has ever lived, Ben Hogan was not, nobody really cares about the LPGA and it's quality of golf and my Detroit Tigers are starting to play better.

My turn!

Tiger is the greatest golfer since Jack N, but it is very annoying when the media attempts to sensationalize everything he does. I swear Rich Learner and Miller both want him in their non golf threesome. I hate hearing silliness like: If anyone else were to attempt this shot out of the rough, their wrist would break. I was rooting for Tiger until Rocco started to show some promise. I root against Kobe Bryant because he's an idiot, and doesn't know how to be a play maker, but there will always be idiot fans that believe the best scorer is the best player... Foolish Souls. I am also annoyed with Augusta National and the USGA because they should have instated a tourney ball years ago. I am even more peeved with Augusta N for "Tiger Proofing" their historic course. All they needed to do was make the fairways narrower, and force everyone to play with a less supped up ball.

Tiger is the best from fairway to green, but his driving is shameful. As much as I go to war with the Hogan cult, Hogan was definitely a better ballstriker, and played in much rougher times.

Here's another thing that p*** the juice out of me: The Tiger commercial where his father said he would dump a golf bag in the back of Tiger's swing, and that he would stop mid-swing, and start over. WTF does that have to do with mental toughness. Mental toughness is overcoming odds, not playing distraction games with your pops. What Lance Armstrong did takes mental toughness... Hogan's comeback was an example of mental toughness. I guess tiger gets a cookie for playing with a bum knee?!

The hype machine is also responsible for the greatness of Michelle Wie. Where is she? Where are her wins? Her majors? Did she ever make a PGA cut.

Let's exalt people for the right things.

BTW Who cares if the majority of high handicap hacks don't care about the LPGA... What do they know about golf anyway. There is more to learn from watching Annika split fairways than Tiger McDuff a drive 30 yards off target.

I hope Annika takes down one last major before she retires... I feel so conflicted not cheering on Lo-Cho, but The Machine is women's golf. Only idiots disrespect her game.

Summary:

- Tiger is good, but probably wouldn't have dominated the tour during the golden age of golf. He can't drive.

- The Hype machine is annoying.

- The LPGA is fun to watch, if you like precision golf.

- Michelle Wie is a hack, and should pay me $10k/hr to be her guru. I'll give her the same lesson I gave my niece.

- If you cannot shoot in the seventies, then Annika should be your model.

- Golf is lame. I spend more time cycling, and hiking.

It's funny about how he hurt himself running because i am friend with a few PT's who are avid golfers and we would exchange services (PT for me and lessons for them).

Does anyone remember when Tiger's workout came out sometime last year? When he said he ran between 3-5 miles a day? All of the PTs told me that it was insane and between the running and the stress he puts on his knee from his swing, he would have a very serious knee injury at some point in his career.

I hope Tiger takes a long hard look at his swing and finds a way to putt less stress on that joint, otherwise he won't be healthy enough to break Jack's record.

Maybe our resident Manzella Physical Therapist (sorry i forgot your username) can comment on what my friends told me.

I guess you mean me-haven't written much in the last year. Anyway, yes Tiger has put a ton of stress on his knee - esp considering he had 2 knee surgeries before the one after the Masters.

In regards to his exercise routine- the article I read said he would have some soft tissue work done then do his workout--and workout almost daily. This is exactly what all of us should do if we had a bazillion dollars. His workout (what little was actually said) sounded good but it was long when you included the run. The 3-5 mile run and I believe after a long workout did surprise me. Esp when you add hitting balls with that.

It is also somewhat unusual that you would tear an ACL jogging. Doing some type of sprints with cuts perhaps but unless he stepped in a hole that is a bit weird.

From the ACL reconstruction point-- he'll be fine once he returns. If he can win a US Open with a torn ACL then sheeesh.

As always ....Curious

ok here is the deal as far as I am concerned.......OPINION ONLY....( maybe even far-fetched so dont flame)......

NOONE is is better shape that tiger....meaning he will also HEAL FASTER......

but not so fast Lee HArvey............

ANINKA is retiring because she is on the juice and now that the LPGA is testing she CANT compete ( see OCHEA this year) and NOT being on the needle is making her injury prone............................................

anyone see a similar fate with tiger ????????? I DO........... look at pics from back in day........he is scrawny and frail........now he is Barry Bonds?? PLEASE he juices NO DOUBT....and now that test are coming he has to Lay low and then he got injured and does not have the needle to heal him............

Hogan played in rougher times? Maybe money wise, but it took him multiple shots at playing the tour to even make ends meet. Tiger had the rough times of being a minority in a white-only sport. And for all the times I have heard the story(which is unverified) of Hogan watching his father's suicide, Tiger was tied to a tree as a boy and barraged with rocks and N-bombs. I'm not saying watching suicide isn't worse, its just not like Tiger grew up easy.

Summary:

- Tiger is good, but probably wouldn't have dominated the tour during the golden age of golf. He can't drive.

Tiger grew up when power was more important than driving accuracy. Hogan didn't. Does it make sense to you that the way the game was played at their respective times shaped their playing styles?

Must you state the obvious?

As a 'fan' of golf, I hate seeing power without accuracy rewarded. He'll never be the best golfer of all time to me. Jack N will forever be the greatest golfer.

When applied to golf, mental toughness is such a joke.

The LPGA is where real golf is played!

According to you, even if Tiger beats Jack in his prime on today's courses, Jack is still better.

what makes you so sure that tiger juices?

My 2p:

1. Tiger's victory at the 08 US Open, playing on two stress fractures and an ACL that needed reconstruction, is a truly astonishing feat.

2. Tiger needs 4 more Majors, not 5, to beat Jack's record. Jack has 20 majors (not 18) and Tiger has 17 majors (not 14). The rewriting of history here is ASTONISHING. When Jack won at August in 1986, everyone knew, and all the media reported, that it was his 20th major. To erase the US Amateur victories is to do a injustice to Tiger, to Jack, and ESPECIALLY to Bobby Jones, whose grand slam is taken away from him entirely.

3. Perhaps Hogan was a better ball striker. Tiger is certainly not the best driver. Jack was once known as the best long iron player of all time; I think Tiger is better. And no one to date has ever putted under pressure and hit clutch shots under pressure like Tiger. On Sunday and Monday Tiger simply did not miss a clutch putt. And I agree that announcers blow things out of proportion, but the shot Tiger hit on 15 on Sunday - I just do not believe that there is a single golfer on the planet other than Tiger who could execute that shot under pressure. For everyone else, it was literally an impossible shot.

Now my memory is fading. Was 15 spectacular on Sunday? On Monday, he hit a spectcular shot from the right trap (a trap on 9) to about 10 feet.

...

Ok. This is where our conversation ends. No point in arguing with someone that has already made their mind up despite the fact that Tiger's career isn't over.

Surely the best golfer is the one that gets it in the hole is the least shots?....
It doesn't matter whether the ball has been in the fairway or not....

That is the point exactly, and that is what makes Tiger the soon to best golfer ever. I would argue you could say the best now because Tiger is putting the ball in the hole from everywhere. Jack and Ben did not have to get out of the scrapes that Tiger has had too. Best "Ball striker" Jack, Ben etc, best "GOLFER" Tiger hands down.
