Tiger's Putting

ok, if he does grip it in the heel pad then it probably explains why he opens and closes the clubface during the stroke.

Now that I think about it, it makes absolutely no sense that you put the putter grip in the palm of your hand to eliminate wrist cocking. Sure, putting the grip of an iron in the palm of your hand makes proper wrist cocking next to impossible but there is one problem extrapolating that to the putting stroke, there’s no wrist cocking in putting. The wrist movement that kills a putting stroke is the bending back and forth not cocking. By getting the putter grip out of the fingers you are losing tons of feel, plus I think you add more tension in the forearms with the palm grip, at least from my experimenting I have been doing.

Only one really good post in this thread.....the reality is you need to find something that makes your putting stroke consistent and then just adjust for it. That's it. Just like kenny perry playing a big draw all the time; he adjusts and that's what he does.

Do the same for your putting; personally i like the way i teach it and the only downside to my method is it's difficult on very long putts but other than that, i feel works extremely well.

Jim, so what is it Tiger does that makes HIS stroke so consistent?

There are a ton of junk putting strokes out there that are "consistent" until you apply a little pressure on them. I think the putting stroke is the least understood aspect of golf because every one "can" putt. I have been to enough amateur tourneys to know that a good putting stroke is rare in the amateur ranks and in the pros that is what truly separates the Sergio's from the Tiger's.

I thought there might be some others on here who have really “looked” into Tiger’s stroke and might have come away with some nuggets.

Maybe theres no need to analyse everything to the minutest detail, accept that Tiger is just so naturally talented at putting, remember when he came on tour with that swing but still he hit the ball purer than anyone titleist ever measured, thats talent.

Oh and also Adam Scott's putting stroke looks just like Tiger's but the results........

Adam Scott sets up the same as Tiger does but from what I have been watching they don't putt the same. Heres a link of Tiger and Adam, notice where Adams butt of the putter ends up and look where Tigers ends up on pretty much the same length of stroke. Adam uses his whole mid section and Tiger use mostly shoulders.

I believe Kenny has also figured this out in his putting; he seems to aim right (probably how he "sees" all his shots) and pull it back towards target.

theres nothing wrong with sergio's stroke. the difference is in green reading, speed control, and mental ability. stroke is the easiest part to do effectively.

According to Utley Sergio's stroke was flawed before he started working with him. But I guess you probably know better.

wow...really?

1. what do you expect utley to say? "sergio's stroke was fine but i changed it anyways". utley is selling his product

2. what makes utley the god of putting? because he has a book about it? big deal.

3. as much as i dont like his style, there is a pretty definitive source for putting info from a putting instructor on the web. if you are going to take up for someone, at least let it be him and not some dime a dozen short game instructor.

Totally off topic, I couldn't careless about your analysis of Sergio, if you want to add something productive about Tiger's putting technique great. I don't come here to be "somebody", I just come for information. So go ahead and break down his mechanics and keep the rest to yourself, thanks.

untrue. otherwise you wouldn't have responded, twice.

theres no magic to any of tiger's mechanics, full swing to putting. ask mr manzella what he thinks of tiger's full swing and hell start rattling off a list of things he would change to make him a better driver of the ball.

you would most likely putt a little better if you copied tiger's action, but it wouldnt mean you would hole the putts he does. theres more to putting than the stroke. if you want to be a better putter, you have to consider the whole game, not just a piece.

Do you mind sharing how you teach it Jim?Thanks.

Maybe the quote should be "putting execution" though cause u need a stroke.

So far I like an aggressive stroke esp. for short and shortish putts. I can relate a lot to Jack's stroke, so far.

This season I'm gonna again re-test something like what Tiger does and see if I can do better with it than last time. I think I will.

Unfortunately, you can copy his technique but you can't copy his will

Who says you can't try to copy (if it is even a good word) whatever you want...?

People probably told him he couldnt copy Jack. I know its tall odds BTW. Just saying.

Swing like Hogan, putt like Tiger... Never own your motion.

I like it. Often immitated.......ever really duplicated...?

You will be more apt to analyze if you want to get better no?
