Tour Pro's Swing speed

I'll look around for the studies but I think what was found out was the elasticity was of far greater importance than strength when it came to distance in golf.

Stretching, imo, is the secret to strength.

Ma used the term, "Use Supple Quickness, not rigid slowness"....

After watching the Tiger Challenge this weekend- especially Tiger, Stenson and Ogilvy - I am amazed at how much speed they generate from about hip level in the downswing through the ball. They are so smooth in their backswing and first part of downswing to about hip level then they just whip it through.
Beyond natural ability, how do they achieve this speed and how can I get some! Is it the pivot driving their arms through, arms swinging hard, or a combination arms/pivot?

They put the club into a position (waist high or so) that the head must travel a great distance in a very short time, and they simply hang on. Stronger muscles would allow one to hold on better, but you don't find many gorillas on the PGA tour.

How can you get some? I would suggest you buy a swing speed measuring device that clocks tempo as well. See where you are-Tour tempo is around .9 to 1.1 sec I think and avg. driver speed is about 115.

I think the problem is people dont really try to learn and they want a shortcut. I learned something about my waggle two days ago that hinders my swing because the elbow rotates the opposite way it should during the waggle, go look into hogans book and it was there. The info was there before, I just was not seeing it.

if scripture is the word, people want it dumbed down because they dont want to take the thime to learn for themselves, and along the way it looses some of its meaning. to transate it to our language is necesarry, but the multiple translations after that may be unecesarry.

in golf when someone wants one book they want five because there are so many crap ones out there.

Birdie,
I understand your dilemma...I used to think the same...

Brad Petersen is 5'10" and weighs about 150-160. But he has hit a recorded drive of over 450 yards...

My personal feeling is that it depends on the technique you use to get the clubhead moving.

My preference is "The throw" from the top originally advocated by James Braid (he called it "The Corkscrew"), which was then taught to Mike Austin as a boy...
It seems the easiest way to get the clubhead moving really fast, after that you just hang on (the first time I tried it, it nearly pulled my left arm out of its socket)..
Maybe some extra muscle helps in allowing the body, hips, arms etc to keep up with the clubhead once you have got it moving, but my own feeling is that a swing with a delayed uncocking of the wrist angle, as most people seems to stipulate is what you need to increase clubhead speed, needs much more active muscle involvement over a shorter period of time, hence it may well be that some of the more muscular types would find it easier.

tought technique all you want, for smaller people it is a NECESSITY. However being strong will help you create more speed. If you don't believe me go to a long drive event. The "smaller guys" who are still huge do need more technique but being tall and big will help.

A thread gone mad...

Way too much advertising by a couple of folks on this thread. They need to stop doing it, or they will not be allowed to post.

I will simplify all of this in two sentences:

You can hit further if you are small by using better technique.

If a bigger, stronger guy (or girl) uses the SAME technique—you lose.

Next subject.

Assuming equipment is also fit to optimize each player (spin rate, launch angle, etc.). Maybe club fitting endorsemets shouldn't be as prominent in an instructional forum, but it's hard to understate the importance of matching your equipment to your swing.
