What's the advantage of club fitting

Just wondering what would be the advantages of having a set of club fitted as compared to buying a set off the shelf. Would it fix ball flight problem or give the player a better distance?

Any input or comment is much appreciated.

One thing to keep in mind is if you are in the process of making or planning on making a swing change I would not get fitted till the swing change is completed.

If your serious about your game and want to improve, get your clubs properly fitted for you. I play with some members that like to buy clubs off of Ebay. They say "look I got this TM Burner for cheap". They hit the ball all over the place. I ask them if it is the proper flex for you and the usual answer I get is "I feel like I have stiff flex swing". I just laugh to myself. Also alot of people forget about getting fitted properly for their putter as well. Its the most important club in your bag.

IF the student has a horrendous grip, posture, stance, and pivot then an optimized club fitting session probably won't help a whole lot vs. getting the fundamentals fixed (club face control, flat left wrist, etc) first.

Having said, everyone should have clubs that are the proper length. This is relatively 'cheap' fix in that the grips can be removed and inserts installed to make the club a bit longer. I suppose the club lie angle could be adjusted too.

Agree 100%. I bet if I went and got fitted last month some yayhoo at Golftec would have told me I was 2 degress upright...why?? "cause you hit hit the ball right and this will help straighten it out"..now I am about standard and in another month after lesson with BManz who knows. Very important.

What are the advantages of "Really Good" Clubfitting.

You get a set that is the right length.

The right lie.

The right weight.

The right CG placement.

Gapped correctly.

The right shaft.

I don't know, but I'd bet when I get my Clevelands back from Cool Clubs, it will save me 2 a side.

No kiddin'

My experience is that getting fitted clubs helped me improve my shitty game immensely because I had clubs that "felt" the same from driver to SW, this assisted my swing/pivot/tilt etc to stablise into something resembling a golf swing.

I agonised for weeks about "should I do it/am I good enough for fitted clubs/is it a waste of money" end result was much faster rate of improvement after I got them, swing has changed dramatically since, lie angles adjusted accordingly and back on the improvement trail again.

Do it!!!!

Plus what Brian said :D

I have worked in the golf club business for many years and have seen alot. You can get a set of clubs static fit to you pretty easy by following some simple measurements but if you want to truly get a custom fit you need to see a GOOD fitter and your probably not going to get that at a box store or even at alot of golf clubs. To really get a good fit your going to need a repeating swing though, so if your just starting out I would recommend a static fit set of clubs and when you find a swing that you can repeat take your clubs to a good fitter and have them tweaked or replaced. If you already have a repeatable swing find a good fitter first.

Quick question for Brian, Is trackman the only way to go for club fitting in the future? I ask because I have never been on one and would like to know if its the best thing for a club fitting?

Brian what is the approx. cost to get fitted by a top notch fitter like Cool Clubs (or someone similar)? I have been told I could get fit for the whole set for $100.

I have always wanted to get fitted, but had concerns over if it would be worth it. If I could improve 2 shots a side I would definitely do it!!!

Also do you think fitting helps better players more or vica versa?

Thanks everyone for the input although I was encouraged that another poster said that it helped to have the same swing weight and behavior throughout the set from wedges to driver.

Interesting in that while at times I can hit the irons well, I end up adjusting due to the woods or driver is not performing and end up messing up my whole swing through these adjustments.

Will shop around and compare notes before I jump in as I do not want to get fitted just for the sake of getting fitted, if you know what I mean.

A GOOD fitter is the real dilemma here.....About 3 years ago, I searched out a Certified, class A, PCS club fitter in my local area. The guy had all the tools to do the job but.....let's just say I wouldn't go back.

Since the subject is asking what the advantage of club fitting would be, may I suggest you go to two places to find your answer.

First: Go to the International Clubmaker's Guild and look for a clubmaker near you. The members of the Guild will work hard to provide clubs that will help your game. Most "big box" stores will sell you what they have on the shelf and will use the launch monitor to charge you more. Perhaps I should tell you that I am a little biased towards the Guild, I'm on the Board of Directors. You will find the Guild members well trained and knowledgeable and you will not be taken.

Second: Go to the top head and shaft designer in the world.... Tom Wishon. He has several books out that will answer all your equipment questions. He has a little book that I give to all my customers entitled: "12 Myths that could wreck your golf game. Trust me, you can't get better information.

I would upload here a Power Point presentation of Tom's 12 myths but I couldn't figure how to do it.

Also, I think I've made this offer before to all of Brians forum members, anyone in the Western Massachusetts area can come to Longhi's par 3/4 golf course and I'll do a free fitting and give you a copy of Tom's book. I am a Certified Class A Clubmaker.
