...he has a weak left hand grip/ poor right hand grip/ leans left at address/ right hip much higher than the left/ shoulders WAY open right forearm very high/ very, very cupped left wrist at the top/ way above plane/ total leakage/ vertical hinge action/ reverse pivot...

..what do you do first?

Grip...Explain hinge action and then on to stage one chipping.

Don't proceed till this is mastered.

Have a cocktail;)

Say hello.
Put the player at ease.

Get background info (do they play any othwer sports, their style of learning, the amount of time to practice, any physical problems, equipment.....)
Tell them that to see improvement they must:
1. Understand
2. Remember
3. Have good information
4. Put words into feeling and pictures
Explain that you are going to give them something different then they presently have and if it doesn't feel different when they leave, then they have not made any changes.
The different feeling will become a habit with practice.

How a ball gets flight.
The design of the golf club and it's three functions and how they relate to three imperatives.
Specifics as it relates to their swing.......How the left hand controls the club-face:).

Seems it would be easiest to start w/o a club from the feet up? Add club once'Let arms hang down" position is reached.

sounds like a swing fan is needed, inside back corner, and balance, eyes closed practice for a while.

I'd show them my drills as well.

No clubhead needed until that feels comfortable.

On of my favorites is momentus strength trainer as well. Again, eyes closed, focus on balance and 'seeing' the path of the hands in your mind. The 'par power' is a cheap aid you can pick up off ebay that is useful for this as well, although not as useful as the momentus strength trainer (not bad when combine with a swing jacket though, but there can be issues with the jacket unsupervised)

At this point the ball just 'gets in the way' and the student needs to be able to 'see' what lag is all about, understand the concept of pressure points and work on smooth balanced motion.

Knudsons views, with the 'mind in the hands' variation, if you will.

No club, tossing balls around the green, then on to one handed chips/pitches, right hand only first.

not one of the gurus here, but personally i would but the person in a correct impact fix position and have them start chipping balls, 2 ft. back 2 ft. thru, feel flat left wrist, bent right, slowly grow the swing and the grip change would be an easy sell.

If I had the swing knowledge of someone like Brian Manzella I would start by telling the pupil to forget everything he has ever learned or believed about the golf swing and that we are going to start over with a completely clean slate because quite frankly that swing sucks. (The pupil's results would have told him this long ago) From here, if I was a pupil, I would like him to start by simply demonstrating the correct swing in slow motion from the 9 o'clock position to the 3 o'clock (toe up to toe up) and then allow me to try. I would ask him to ignore what I am doing correctly and start by correcting my most obvious fault and take it from there until I had a clear understanding of this mini swing.

Short chips with Right hand grip, right forearm downsing down and out action, lag right index finger into inside of ball.

Can't be fixed in one lesson. Get student to commit to a series. 1st, fix the grip. 2nd, get a Tac Tic, tongue depresser in the golf glove or some device that will reinforce a flat left wrist. Then do what Ben Doyle would do, start with chipping. Then, after that is under control, proceed to short pitches, then full motion.

I have fixed guys like this in less than 30 minutes....

I do it everyday.

Looking for more responses....

So far, I haven't heard anything that would make me want to hire you to teach for me.

Well this is a very timely thread for me because I've been thinking about this. Brian's going to get a shot at delivering me from hackerdom but it's going to be a one shot deal--no series of lessons. I was figuring on two-three hours worth of work. If you can do it in 30 minutes, then we can put the sticks away and go lookin' for a good poboy!! :)

As far as your question, I would say "get a grip" first--but that seems too obvious to be correct.

First: briefly explain flying wedges. I like the concept of a straight left arm assembly and a right assembly with two bends, wrist and elbow as a way of teaching it to a beginner. Flying wedges are the single concept that contains 100% of the golfers daily minium requirement of TGM knowledge. :) Then....
I would set the right forearm on plane. Re-educate his right hand on the club so it is able to take the club up correctly to the top. I would put him a more of an A frame (centered head) instead of a tilted K frame (lean right). The proper set of the right forearm would stop the lean to the left along with a pre-turned right hip.
I’d like him to feel the sensation of pulling his thumb to the top (6b1d) over his right shoulder, this would prevent the cup of the left hand.

Hinge action later.

i think the guys that talked about chipping and getting the correct impact fix are on the right track to me. today i took a friend of mine who has never played golf we started hitting balls and he whiffed and topped every one after a small bucket i took him to chip i showed him the flying wedges and he procedded to chip for a half hour we went back to the range and he was hitting an 8 iron 150 yards right at a flag over and over it even suprised me because of how bad he was at first im very interested to see what brian and brady will say though
