So apparently, despite such an huge anti flipping campaign by many people, flipping isn't really a problem if you hit the ball solidly and powerfully while doing it (Ben Curtis, John Cook, Geoff Ogilvy, etc.). It is only a problem for hackers who hit weak mishits. Right?

i think i'd agree

but these tour players learn to time it through hours of practice every day and learn to time that flip correctly. hackers who play once a fortnight cant do this.

i also havnt had an answer to my question whether its the opinion of the Manzella Academy that flipping isnt a bad thing unless the shaft is still leaning forward

look at the "professional flippers"....

Not as powerful
And most importantly, Not as consistant.(in their Careers)

What happened to Lee Janzen? What happened to Retief? John Cook never won a major Geoff Ogilvy... wins a major, wins a WGC event this year, and has had horrible showings in the rest of pretty much everything else, including majors.

could each and every one of these guys take each and every one of us, any given day, on any given course flipping all over the place, while we are pivoting, forward shaft leaning, and snapping the hell out of our chains, yes. Thats why they are on tour. They are professionally flipping, and doing it better than all of us, congratulations... but there is a better way to do it.

They both power flipped their ways to 2 us opens a piece, supposedly the biggest test of accurate ballstriking there is? Not the best examples to give dash. 2 career majors is pretty good for all but hall of fame players.

Not exactly.

I really don't even have to work on it with the poorer players anymore.

I fix the ROOT CAUSE.

But, to be honest, the huge anti-flipping campaign was largely misplaced.

go on then, what is the root cause?

trying to lift the ball? trying to avoid hitting the ground?

Or maybe there isn't....:D

Some of the best balls I ever hit were when actively flipping...165 yard 8-irons etc.. (I'm an old codger..:D)..
As you said tho, your timing fas to be spot on......

OLD THREAD RESURRECTED

Flip or no flip, he's got an Open Championship and I don't.

I played with Ben a couple times in high school. Actually, he is the reason I'm teaching music and not golf.

Sectional tournament, qualifier for the Ohio High School championship.....gusting wind maybe 20-30 mph, 45 degrees, spitting rain all day. I shoot what I thought was a respectable 82. Absolutely as good as I could play given the conditions. He beat me by 12. Really, he only hit a couple more greens than I did (not many). Proof of the old line "it's not how but how many". I understood after that day that I better find something I'm ACTUALLY good at.

I don't think Curtis is a flipper. He is an early releaser. You can release early without flipping. My definition of flipping is where the left wrist bends significantly after impact(clubhead a foot or two past impact).

Not many early releasers on tour and just about zero flippers on tour.Players who play well doing this are the exceptions, not the rule so I would not use them as models just because they are tour or scratch player.

Abd before before someone mentions Tom Watson,I can tell you Curtis makes him look like Sergio Garcia.Watson has more than enough lag.

Agree. SUPER sweep release. Didn't hit it very far compared to some. I was with him mostly off the tee. The other time I played with him, the same thing. Not real long, just hit lasers all day and made putts like crazy.
