A good case can be made for Sam Snead.
A record 82 PGA titles.
Winning PGA Tour (not Senior tour) events in 5 decades

Snead was never noted for his short game.

I agree...great total package with the big game..BUT....the putter and the short game was not his cup of tea!!!!

Then why can't he hit a fairway with the Driver..

Never heard of Snead, Hogan, Nelson and Lee Buck with the driver troubles???

He can win majors with a 3 or 5 wood. Who cares when you have his results? It's a new game, one where your Hogan's and Trevino's wouldn't be as competitive.

The best swing would have to also be the most effective.

Hogan's swing speed has been clocked at 132 mph, just as fast as Woods, if not a touch faster. Why do so many people think Hogan bunted the ball in his prime? Hogan WOULD NOT BE AFRAID OF WOODS!

I'm sure that is impirical!

I would think that the "best swing ever" would have to combine distance and accuracy. Being a true ballstriker was cool 10-20 years ago, but in todays day being able to slide the ball left, right, up, and down isn't as important as launching it far and having a great short game to take advantage of your length.

I have to say that Tiger Woods combine both length and accuracy (driver smiver!) better than anyone. Ben Hogan and Lee Buck are cool relics of the past, but I doubt either one would want to face Tiger on a Sunday evening with his red shirt and game face on.

Corey Pavin won this year . . . and won an Open on a long tough course . . . I bet Lee can STILL get it out there with Pavin.

Lee Buck is just slap a gamer . . . we can talk swing and all that but Lee had a set of canollis on him that wouldn't fit in a 28 ounce tomato can.

I think Lee's swing was built to hit pressure shots . . . the turned left hand eliminates any need for swivel into his hinge action . . . I still gotta believe that a plane shift ain't necessarily a BAD thing. Mr. K even said that it is impossible to PRECISELY maintain the same plane. So if you loop it the same way every time you ain't under once and over the next. He was UNDER everytime. One of the reasons that you see the club loaded up is because the efficient hand action. The right wrist stays level and the left wrist is not way cocked. Then at start down the club can be loaded better because you can float load the accumulators more and not just HANG ON.

Check out Sergio's motion in one of the recent golf digests . . . his hands are starting to look more like Lee's plus he's got the Hitch IN his Giddy Up too. #1 in GIR's I think too???

I think of Corey Pavin as being a guy that the game left behind. I was happy for his win at the U.S. Bank after a decade longgggg winless drought, but how often do you think a guy with his game can win on tour????

Fred Funk won the Players . . . that's pretty strong too. He's not as short as Pavin but he ain't no bomber.

But I'll give it to you that the tour winner today is a different animal.

if snead and hogan played todays game tiger would not have 12 majors. probably only have 2 green jackets. Hogan with todays equipment would be right up there with all the long hitters. And snead im guessing would be longer than tiger his game is most like the bombers of this era.

Yeah Yeah Yeah.... Get Real!

Unlike Snead and Hogan, Tiger can actually putt and has a great short game. No side saddling or anything like that.... Take two sloppy putters and put them on todays greens and you get two "also ran players."

When Hogan was in his prime he was known as THE BEST putter around. He was also a very long hitter. I've played shady Oaks several times with Woody-B-Dub and he shows me where Hogan would routinely hit it in his last years of playing...long hitter. Lee Buck, when he won all of his tournaments was playing against a guy by the name of Jack Nicklaus (heard he was pretty long) Lee got the better of him whenever they played heads up. Through the ball, nobody is or was as good as Lee. Performed the three imperatives better than anyone. When he won the New Orleans Open at Lakewood If memory serves me he didn't miss a fairway all week (Brian says he didn't miss a green either) and didn't have a bogey. Lakewood may be one of the toughest courses ever to accomplish this, the fairways are crowned and the rough is nothing but cypress trees with exposed roots. Anyone that I know that played any amount of golf on tour when asked who hit it the best...the answer I always get is no one could touch LBT.

But Hogan wasn't short....

Pavin just won on tour and he is SHORT.

I mean.....he's prolly not gonna compete in majors anytime soon......but he won a tourney against all the bombers.

And that doesn't even matter cause Hogan wasn't short...

Snead longer than Tiger?? Not sure about outright longer but it might be close anyway, no?

I do agree tho that those guys could have competed. Obviously.

I mean....Hogan.....greatest ballstriker that ever lived prolly.....NOT a short hitter. Just as competitive as anyone who's prolly ever lived. Etc.

And Snead's no slouch that's for damn sure.....I mean.....these guys were GREAT players.....not just some average old guys......they woulda given Tiger a real good go.

I mean really.....out of active players.....who's the next leading major winner after Tiger?

If hogan and snead played today on these fast greens they would be better i dont know about you but i make a hell of alot more putts on fast smooth greens. plus if they played today they would have better putting strokes and concentrate more on short game with the l wedge and all the advantages they didnt have. What about put a persimmon wood in tigers hand i gaurentee snead outdrives tiger and hits more fairways all day. with the new technology snead would be like Bubba watson long. Also snead starting side saddleing late in career he also won 82 official pga tournaments he actually one over 100 pro tournamnets.

Snead was one of FEW people who could use a persimmon wood and a balata ball over 300 yards on "shaggy" fairways.

Give him the "rolling" fairways of today and the equiptment and he easily be another 30 yards longer.

Sometimes I watch all star golf on the golf channel and snead is always playing and he use to drive it like 270 most the time but sometimes he would crank it up and hit it over 300!

These days you get at least 10 extra yards roll on TOUR CUT fairways, because they cut them so tight!

and about 30 plus for the longer lighter driver with a higher cor. And you can hit it with that 300 yard swing on it everytime because the drivers are ridiculouls forgiveing in comparison. my guess is if snead was around today he would be up there with the top 3 long drivers. And would hit it in the fairway alot more than those guys. Oh yeah and look better doing it.
