My coach said the best swing he has ever seen is Grant Waite or someone!

He has a fantastic swing, if you get the free trial version of V1 they have a bunch of Grant's swings on it.

With vastly improved equipment, ball and courses, I think Hogan would have have given TW great competition, probably winning against him more than say, VJ does or has.

Sorry but thats baloney. Im no Tiger acolyte but he has the best short game Ive ever seen, he scrambles better than anyone ive ever seen and he hits more clutch putts than anyone ive ever seen. Sure off the Tee and Fairway Hogan may have rivalled him but from 100 yards in, Tiger would have blown Ben away. Did Hogan also have the absolute control of his game to hit the range of shots Tiger does? Im not sure

Would also be interesting to see how Hogan stood up to Tigers mental toughness

Have you never seen Seve? he is better than Tiger and has even more shots in his bag.

What about Nicklaus? it is very close between them.

MAY Have rivalled him, Hogan was better according to Nicklaus, Player and others it wouldn't even be close Hogan is that much better.

Thats just stupid you must remember Tiger has learned his punch 3wood shot and 2 iron 'stinger' from Hogan, when he was taught by Butch Harmon (who was very close to Hogan- through his dad). Also according to nicklaus Hogan was the best shotmaker of all time.

this would actually be interesting, but i think Hogan at least would not be scared of Tiger like most pros are today. I think Tiger's scrambling ability and the length of putts he holed would drive Hogan crazy. On the other hand I think Hogan's Ice cold demeanour and presence and relentless accuracy and ball striking abilitymay have some effect on Tiger

This wouldn't be a contest whatsoever. Hogan could flat out ignore everything around him, whether it was Claude Harmon making a hole in one, or people snapping pictures. I've followed Tiger, what he has to put up with from his football gallery is ridiculous. But still, Hogan would have made Tiger seem as though he has rabbit ears.

It's one of the things that is frustrating to debate. Hogan lived in a different time when it was really tough to be a pro golfer. Can you imagine the transportation hassle of going from Texas to play in the British Open back in the 1940's? Hogan only made the trip once.

Everything today is better. My feeling is that if you matched TW and Hogan at their best, TW would usually win, but on U.S. Open courses where accuracy is at a premium, I would rate Hogan his equal or near it. I don't see the matchup as being an "all or nothing" kind of deal.

IMO, it's unfortunate accuracy and shotmaking is not rewarded more and errant golf shots (irregardless of distance) not penalized more.

But...that's the way the modern game has gone, for better or worse.

Are you joking me!

Ben Hogan was no chump lol...

David said he would give Tiger great competition....

....you're saying that he wouldn't???

Man....

If Bob May can compete against Tiger.....BEN HOGAN (BEN HOGAN!) sure as hell can....

(BEN HOGAN)

Gimme a break....

Come on..... if we were to bring Mr. Hogan back from the dead and swap out Vijay for Hogan in the final round of todays tourney, Mr. Hogan would have to learn a new form of mental focus--- called blocking out a loud rude gallery and demanding media. It's impossible to honestly match guys up from different eras.

I'm one of the few people that wish golf fans were louder and would do the wave like the crowd did during Agassi's last match. Pro Golfers are so soft and get upset with a little jeering from the gallery. I wonder if MJ ever missed a shot because of rowdy fans? and we call this game a sport...

I really think Hogan would be fine...

Wouldn't give the friendliest interviews prolly (from what I've read anyway...take it for what it's worth)...

And besides....if he had trouble with anything he'd learn to manage it anyway......one of the hardest working most dedicated pros ever prolly....that guy was never satisfied...

I agree with you, I was insinuating that Tiger does not have "golf fans" as most of the rest of the PGA Tour guys do. I don't think tennis and basketball are great examples, think about gymnastics. The slightest twitch and you could break your neck and people are going crazy. Yes, golfers are generally quite soft and pathetic. I'd want quiet too admittedly.

I wonder if kids argue about Magic cards quite similarly to what we are doing here. Hmmmmm, scary!

The other thing thats forgotten about is physical stength. Tiger is 6'2 and built like the proverbial brick outhouse. He is a massive physical specimen with extraordainary core strength and flexibilty. Hogan, tragically, had his accidents and misfortunes and I dont believe he'd have been able to compete physically. Tiger would be 70 yards past him, like he is most of his competition now

But as has aleady been pointed out its like comparing apples and pears

I thought we were talking about each player at their prime?

Good point mrodock...

...

TTank...Hogan won majors even after his accident....

...

70 yards behind Tiger?

No way in hell....

Tiger is LONG...

But Hogan wouldn't bunt it 240 or w/e....I don't know the stats but I'd have to think he could hit it further than that even in the 50s when he played with persimmon and balata and long fairways.

On the Shell's match he is in his 60's I believe and hitting it 250-260.

Byron

Nelson's 1945 season is the best ever by a male golfer. He won 18 times, including 11 tournaments in a row. He did it with a 68.33 stroke average that was not bested for another 55 years.

Are there any stats on Nicklaus, Hogan, Jones, etc. swing speed ? It should be possible to calculate it based on video, even if they were never measured directly. That would tell you their length if they played today.

If Charles Howell 3 and Sergia can mash the ball the way they do (Hank Kuehne is another "non-brickhouse" body type who crushes it)with their body types, I don't think that Ben would have too many issues with Tiger's length.

Before the accident Hogan was calculated at 132 mph, that's the only one of those I'm aware of. I think Jones was around 110 mph, but the shaft probably had a lot to do with a softer swing.

Hogan's Strength

I don't think there was as much of a strength advantage as you would guess. Hogan did work on his strength. In the latest biography of him the author reported that after his accident he did pullups on the trapeze apparatus set-up on his bed to build his strength. Also, Jack Dempsey after shaking hands with Hogan said he had the strongest grip of anyone he had ever met.
