Clubthrowing may not be the secret to driving the ball with power, but it will surely help the majority of golfers who have poor pivots and have quitting/steering problems.
Throwing clubs will help foster a more athletic-looking golf swing. It's much harder to flip the wrists and lose good impact conditions if you throw them correctly.
As far as hitting the ball farther (i.e. swinging faster)-hitting the gym and getting stronger surely will help. But when I was at the Orlando school, just by looking at the various players/teachers you would have thought that I would be the longest hitter. Wrong. There's lot to gain about developing stronger quads and hamstrings, and weight training will help increase your FLEXIBILITY.
Jim, Darby, Jeff...well just about everyone there could routinely out-drive me. So technique is clearly important. You don't need a high swing speed to bomb the ball out there in the 275-280 range. But you'll always need good alignments and minimal leakage.
