For all the 'talk' about good players doing the Right Forearm Takeaway, what I see is more of a shoulder turn takeaway, with an artificial arm lift to get the club to move up the lines their tearcher are drawing on the videos.

Of course, I thought it looked silly when Tiger did it during the "Tiger Slam," and it din't hurt him much.

A STT can produce a on-plane backstroke without manipulation if the turn is steep-ish like Big Jack in the mid-70's.

The TRICK is finding out which works best for you. Combo or any of the above.

Fantastic post! You've said what I always tried to say :D This sums everything up perfectly...there should really be no more debate about RFT vs STT after this.

Excellent post Brain, just one more question, if there is no teacher drawing line on the videos, do we have to do the artificial arm lift then? Should just work as good isn't it?

Without all the 'line drawers' the tour was full of STTers with the club below the plane.

Like,

Bobby Jones

Ben Hogan

Sam Snead

Arnold Palmer

Gary Player

etc.

So, the answer is lifting the right arm with our elbow, is an option where we can just ignore it, where it does not help us to swing the club any better with this add on motion (RFT)

Not quite.

If you use Right Forearm Takeaway, a PERFECTLY VALID option, then you must 'pickup' the club with your right forearm.

If you use STT then you have an option to lift TOO or not.

IT WILL PRODUCE DIFFERNT RESULTS, even changing shoes will produce different results.

Options, folks....lots of options.
