Did TW Change his grip?

Brandel Chamblee indicated he has on Morning Drive today...

I like the way his new backswing looks and think he can start to really improve his driver if he has in fact strengthened the grip.

I have had lunch with Hank Haney.

I have had dinner with Sean Foley.

Haney is a royal dee-eye-cee, and Sean is not.

He is a really nice guy who seems to really care. And I like that.

He and I have talked on the phone a few times, and talked about TrackMan and getting together. We will one day.

Sean is the kind of guy that knows where to look for info, & really wanted to come to the Anti-Summit but had a schedule conflict.

After talking and teaching at the TrackMan conference, I went down to see Rob Neal at Doral, hanging out with Bobby Cole and watching Tiger play his 1st 12 holes of his last round. I told Sean some of what I saw. But, really not much as it was a dinner with DT and a really nice young teacher pal of Sean's.

Whether or not Sean's ideas get Tiger where Tiger wants them to, is up to the man upstairs. Sean has done quite a good job with O'Hair, Mahan, & Rose.

I told Sean this at dinner (exact quote):

"If Hank goes off on another twitter tirade, tell him that your boy Manzella said he watched the Romano season of the Haney Project, and you are disqualified from criticizing other teachers for twenty years."

Just trying to put some real facts into the rumor mill.

Well said Brian. We'll have to wait and see how the changes play out with Tiger.

Todd,

Word on the Tour is that Foley is a really good guy and an excellent "Coach." My references are solid.

I'm not a fan of the "big words" during interview, etc, but the simple fact is a lot of really good players like to hear his input regardless of the validity.

You mention "learning as you go." I learn as I go everyday and the day I don't learn something is when I'm in a pine box.

The only mistake Foley made was not bringing Bman into the fold if in fact the story of Foley and Dan working together is true.

We all have gotten a lot "smarter" in the past couple of years due to Trackman and sites where we can learn and share knowledge freely, like this site.

I for one, THOUGHT I knew a lot five years ago. Ya know, it turns out I didn't know that much, but I've sure helped a lot of golfers (maybe hurt a couple too) based on my coaching and support.

Let's assume Tiger likes hanging out with Foley as a sounding board and coach.

Let me as you this: if you were asked to step out on the Tour range tomorrow and work with Tiger, would you be a little anxious about it? Would you have 100 percent resolve in what you were going to tell him?

Billy Harmon is an old acquaintance of mine; we were playing one day and I asked him if his brother was nervous about teaching Tiger when they first got together. His answer; his brother and Tiger were a perfect fit, because he said his brothers balls were bigger than Tigers.

Dan: if you are on the range at Bay Hill. Good for you!

Good points, Martin. Foley obviously has many strong attributes. Your students HAVE to like you. No matter what you know. I've just heard countless statements from him which are easily disproven by science. Its not personal. Just seeking the truth. And yes, I've learned a ton in the last few years myself. I have a feeling Foley will look back in years to come and remark how much he had yet to learn at this point. But that's not helping Tiger Woods right now.

I agree wholeheartedly. If he's done that, *now* he can start making some real progress, IMO.

A lot of times that one thing that is going wrong is caused by a bunch of things. So it can be difficult to figure out how to prioritize what to work on. But I think it's been obvious that he couldn't make progress until that grip is changed.

Probably the best thing to happen to Tiger in the past year or so with relation to golf.

I guess a big part of the reason he was in the left rough most of the day yesterday was due to this change?

Brian, does Bobby Cole still stripe it ? I watched him play when he was on tour in the late 70's and he was incredibly good at ball striking.

alot of good posts on here, but you can not keep blaming haney for the way tiger is playing now, that is just an excuse for foley. i have seen avg players sort out their swings in much less time. foley might be able to bluff some people, and he just might get the best player the world has ever seen to play some good golf again, and all his fan boys will say told you so. but the rest of us know that a player of tigers caliber eventually figured out a way to make an unsuitable swing work for him.

What's really funny about this is... Tiger is, was and always will be judged at such a different standard. If another tour player had 7 top 20 finishes in their last 10 starts, they be "coming around nicely for Augusta". But heavy is the head that wears the crown I guess. I will say this, Foley's got balls. That job has ten-foot pole marks on it for a lot of teachers. It's so ironic in a way. Like hey, you think you're good? Try teaching the best in the world!

Folks.....

I have said this before and I will say it again....

ANY PATTERN, BASED ON ANOTHER WORKING PGA TOUR PLAYER PATTERN, DONE NEARLY EXACTLY THE SAME POSITIONALLY, AND WITH THE SAME TRACKMAN NUMBRS, WILL PRODUCE NEAR IDENTICAL RESULTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

!

So, even if this pattern might not be the best for Tiger, I am DAMN SURE that Tiger can do anything Rose, Mahan, or O'hair can do.

Got it?

Brian, I must blatantly disagree with one of your recent statements. You said Haney should be disqualified for 20 years for his mess with Romano. Brian, 20 years isn't nearly long enough.

Got it! Is Foley really teaching Tiger a similar swing to his other players because it doesn't look so. He looks like an S&T guy that hasn't ingrained the proper way to release the club for that swing model --- At least that was the look he had today when he hit that huge pull off the tee.

Those other guys don't look like they're bobbing for apples. Tiger needs to get further from the ball. Like where he was in say......around......oh.......2000.

Maybe. But with the limited success of those guys.

I think his previous success was based on that fact that his swing "suited him". Obviously not necessarily the Haney version, but it wasn't that perverse relative to his natural tendencies. The Sergeant Foley version is a step too far IMHO.

Woods is a human being, not super human. Even he can't be the best in the world with a swing that is alien to everything his body wants to do.

How he swings now is painful to watch. Even the short shots are just plain ugly.

Tiger just still does not look right to me. His intensity seems to be gone. I remember watching him at Firestone a few years ago and it looked like he would just walk through anything that got in his way. Now it looks like he is just trying to not embarrass himself. I hope he gets some sort of game back. I was never a big fan of his behavior but he was undeniably one of the best of all time if not the best.

I think you gotta pull for Tiger to get back into the mix, both for the sake of everyone working in the golf industry and for the sake of American competitiveness vs. Europe. Whether or not you like Tim Finchem.

Yes, for the sake of golf, Tiger MUST return to his old self. Or, someone needs to step up and be the next Tiger Woods. The problem is nobody is ready to do it yet and may not for YEARS. I don't care if you don't like the guy, golf is NOT the same without the red shirt on Sundays, not even close.

Agree.

Get your 2 year olds going right now then for someone to take Tiger place because I don't think there is anyone out there with the skill set and background training to match what he did during his domination. Sure a couple guys will play good win multiple times etc, but they are not going to dominate, (no missed cuts, always in the top 20) the way he did.

And Btw if someone is able to accomplish this let this serve as a reminder to them in 18-20 years. Tell your son to keep it in his pants! You could also keep a couple headline clips of ol Eldrick and his escapades.

Another Mickelson in the mix would be a better plan, multiple majors (eventually ;)) and engaging, a fan favorite. Time will tell...
