Actually Oli, me old codge, I don't know what I am politically. I'm just incensed when I see the difference between Germany and Britain and realise that I cannot ever go home and live there because of the shithole it has become. And it pains me to see how disadvantaged the citizens of the once great country which shaped the modern world now are. The tragedy is that they don't even know it.
These guys had it sussed a hundred years ago.

Wulsy, This is very disheartening to hear. There are so many historical examples of great courage and capacity from the island. Surely the people deserve better.

I'm loathe to comment at the best of times 'cos I haven't lived there for 13 years or so, but you do get the feeling something went dramatically wrong somewhere.
Maybe we should launch our own party and go take the reins...!

Are you in anyway related to Lord Haw-Haw? The similarities are becoming more apparent every time you post.

The country that you have forsaken is providing riches beyond belief to the dross of Europe, all of whom have free passage to enter. We also supply free (third world) health care of a quality they cannot get in Europe or they would stay there and avail themselves of whatever it is (or isn't) that their homeland has to offer.

I don't see many from this "Sceptered Isle" rushing to avail themselves of the largess that Europe has to offer, yet you will all be asking for hand outs to help ease your self-inflicted Euro economic disaster.

Simples, my dear Serge! Stay where you are and keep bitching.

Mr Burner, you are a very fine example of the under-educated and ill-informed victims of the British propaganda which has been perpetrated on the unwitting population of your homeland. Oh, and I bet your parents payed twice for your education (that's taxes and private school fess in case that was above your head). Well, that was a bum deal! ROFL.

Stay where you are and keep believing! Rule Britannia! Oh, sorry I forgot, there's nothing to rule any more. Well, there's always the Falklands.

I think this is a picture which is 'encouraged' by the media and some parties but it isn't quite true.
You will find that countries like Austria, Sweden, Belgium, Germany and Spain have a higher percentage of foreign born people then the UK. Immigration to Europe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And the UK is certainly not handing out any benefits to Europe, that is Germany's role.

But Wulsy, I think you are too negative. The UK is a lovely country, yes it does have its problem (health care, old fashioned class system which forces you to send you kids to private schools, public transport, chavs,nanny state) but it also has a charm that is hard to describe. The countryside is just gorgeous, you've got golf courses where ever you go (Germany is a 3rd world country in that respect and staying with good old German bureaucracy you need a 'Platzreife' - a sort of driving license, to play golf - LOL).
The food has improved dramatically here in the UK as well in the last 10 years. You now have such a wide choice of good food from all around the world - and not only in big cities. You even get Erdinger here now:cool:

Anyway I love this country and I wasn't even born here

We in the UK can only be thankful that we didn't join in the German and French neo empire building exercise aka the euro but unfortunately, just like the US probably, we are going to end up paying to clear up the mess.

To return this thread to the subject of this site, one thing at least we are and always will be better at than the Germans is golf. We have better and far more courses (so less elitist) and, even though their players might be "taller, fitter and healthier", we have better players.

Finally, even though Wulsy probably regards Italy as a third world country like the UK, I hope their guys win on wed/thurs whenever it is just like Chelsea beat Bayern (containing 7? players in the national team) in the Champions League Final.

Hmm. I think I'll stay away from the socio-political analysis here. Olly's first post was tongue in cheek, but I do get a kick out of the hand-wringing "state of the nation" responses that follow the fortunes of a national football team.

Football in this country is a business, and (not that I much care) a pretty damned successful business from the clubs' perspective. International football is an afterthought for everyone apart from tabloid journalists and 90-minute patriots. Every 4 years we get a bit angsty, and then go back to throwing money at premiership clubs and replica shirts.

Right now, this "3rd world country" has a legitimate contender for Wimbledon, a legitimate favourite for the Tour de France, a legitimate favourite for the Olympic road race, a handful of other cycling world champions in track and downhill mountain biking, the 3 top ranked golfers in the world, and a top ranking in cricket.

I'm not really the tub-thumping sort - but this sort of reaction to losing a football match, especially one decided on penalties, is ridiculous.

And there is the small matter of hosting this year's Olympics, not bad for a third world country.

We didn't just lose a football match, we were totally outplayed for an hour and a quarter.

hey Parsey, what a great post! I agree wholeheartedly with you. The UK has a charm and a "je ne sais quoi" which makes it somehow irresistable when you have experienced it.

People in the UK have a warmth to them which you will struggle to find elsewhere and we make films and TV programmes which are IMO the best in the world. Not to mention our world famous sense of humour.

All the more tragic that they/we haven't been able to make more out of our strengths.

Would that be the same kind of dross who left their homelands in the last century and created what is perhaps the richest and most dominant country the world has ever seen, namely the US of A?
