In addition, he now has the physique of a pro football player. I don't think Jack did these things. Jack admits his wedge game was average even for the time. And certainly there is no comparison for physical strength/stamina.

This makes me laugh, Tiger is not as "big" as a person as most people think he is. I remember people talking about how he could bench over 300lbs and that he runs 5 miles a day and that because he's so physically fit is why he wins so many tournaments.

A lot of it is media hype, Tiger isn't as big (muscular wise) as most people would think. If he has the "physique" of any pro football player it would be small cornerback, that's about it.

Tiger is 6'1" Jack is 5'10" Tiger could probably out bench Jack, but fat Jack would have out squat Tiger I believe. Jack was a good all around athlete. Tiger is a golfer. Apples and oranges, Mentally their both leaps and bounds beyond anyone else. head to head they both would have gotten their share. Would have pushed them both tremendously. Jack has 18 majors and 19 seconds. With Tiger in a 20 yr run they both have 20-25 and golf dies because it's a forgone conclusion what the tournament is coming down to.

This is turning into a "who's better: Jack or Tiger" which is not what i'm commenting about.

i don't care that Tiger is 6'1 and that jack was 5'10". If you look at photos of both of them in their peak shape you can clearly tell who was bigger muscularly. With today's equiptment i believe Jack would be as long if not longer than tiger. I remember watching a tournament of some sort when jack was still competing (last year he did i believe) and at his age he still had a 110 or 112 swing speed and was hitting it out there past 275.

I think Jack naturally probably had stronger legs, but I bet Tiger is squatting a lot these days. I'm naturally skinny, but after 7 years of lifting I can squat 350+. And I've take lots of breaks, which Tiger hasn't.

This quote is from 2000:

Tiger: "My max (bench press) was 240 pounds, but that was a while ago. I'm not telling you how much I can do now. Gotta have some secrets, you know."

Sounds like he wanted to make it sound mysterious.

Prolly was 250? ;)

...

The Jack vs. Tiger debate is gonna happen.....but let's be serious here.......neither of those guys is gonna run over the other one.

That's nice, part of the hype.

"Michigan State men's basketball coach Tom Izzo played golf Wednesday with Tiger Woods in the Buick Open pro-am. Woods told Izzo he can bench-press 300 pounds."

This is very consistent with what he reportedly lifted in college (215) and in 2000 (240). I don't really see any reason to doubt it's true.

I love it will people speculate on how much people can bench and squat. It's such a joke. First of all people are ridiculous liars in general, secondly what kind of form are we talking about here, very few people even squat to parallel or bench without bouncing it off their chest. The bottom line is that neither Tiger nor Jack are extraordinarily strong people, that is fluff perpetuated by people who have no clue what an actual strong person is, it's like something Jim Nantz would say. Many NFL players are strong, world's strongest man competitors are strong, Tiger and Jack are a hilarious weak joke compared to them, being strong has virtually nothing to do with it. They have swings with a great dynamic techinique that is why they hit it far. Look at Davis Love, the guy can barely walk down the fairway without being tackled by a gust of wind, yet he hits the ball just as far as Tiger. Strength is a very small part of the puzzle.

Also, since Brian said Tom Barlett is the best driver he's ever seen, I'm kind of on the edge of my seat to see a video of him hitting a drive. Could someone put that up please?

This is Tom on one of our trips to the NoCal golf meccas and our dear Ben Doyle.

The camera angle is slightly off, due to yours truly thinking Tom would hit it down the middle, left of the bunker.

He really didn't even see the bunker. Boom. Ho hum, another 300+ in the short grass.

You think Tiger doesn't have the best personal trainer money can buy ? I'm sure he knows how to bench and squat.

The bottom line is that neither Tiger nor Jack are extraordinarily strong people,

No one said they were, just that Tiger is in much better shape and probably much stronger than Jack was at this point.

Is that why all the tour players are working out ? The point isn't that golfers are strong compared to linebackers or power forwards.

They have swings with a great dynamic techinique that is why they hit it far. Look at Davis Love, the guy can barely walk down the fairway without being tackled by a gust of wind, yet he hits the ball just as far as Tiger.
I'll bet Davis has very good leg strength, like most of the tour players. It's when the strength is added to the technique that it makes a difference.
