Good post Darby.

Your physics make perfect sense to me. (honestly)

But this makes me wonder how a guy like Zuback can be as good as he is...? If he is giving up speed to the field with his MUCH earlier release.........is it pure strength and rotation speed that sets him apart then? Can he be that much superior to everyone else physically??

I think you are overestimating how "good"(in the long drive sense anyways) Zuback is. He has won several times but its not like he wins every year. The way he gets away with his "early" release is brute strength. The guy is gigantic. If you want to keep playing the "all else being equal" game, then a man that is physically stronger will hit it further, period.

Yes that is my game.

I think he has won REMAX 5 times...? (including 4 consecutive years) Yes??

Maybe I am overestimating his dominance.....or maybe there is some other explaination. Weakness of field?

I dunnooo...

Maybe he simply IS that much stronger than everyone else...?

Fine, i'll go that Zuback's a bad model; thefuture37 wins.

BUT

The model is true with Lindsey; Brian tried to make her a snap releaser (did a good job too with a video he posted up a while ago of her called "sweep to snap.") and she did two things:

1) Swung slower
2) Hit the ball shorter

thefuture37 loses lol; now i'm being funny but the point is still there ;)

So I guess we are concluding that despite him not being able to take advantage a snap release, he creates more speed (or at least did when he won REMAX 1996-1999) simply because he is stronger than everyone else.

?

I honestly have nothing else. (theories)

I think he uses a 48" club, with 3" longer radius or 6" longer diameter of semi-circle arc, so his clubhead probably has to travel ~9.42 inches (6 inches x 3.14 x 0.5 of a circle) more in its orbit, so he must begin to release sooner. That extra 3 inches of lever makes up for the sooner release. He's so strong, the extra grams in weight of the longer shaft doesn't bother him.

How's that theory for a real estate lawyer?

you think about threads in terms of winning and losing? maybe thats why some people on here take it so personally and get so nasty when people don't agree with them.

did brian try to get her to move her hands faster with the snap release? if the efficacy of a snap release relies on moving the hands as fast/faster, then wouldn't teaching that too be part of doing it right?

Don't you think that her hand speed would already pretty much be maxed out? I mean, why wouldn't you try and get someone to do that (increase hand speed) either way.

I watch a lot of long-driving comps on TV..
Muscle seems to win out overall, with the very long drives, but the snap releasers are not that much behind.
There are small Japanese women who hit the ball 320, which is non too shady..

Plus, the snap releasers seem to do it with less effort.

But they all use clubs that long no?

Look at this guy Darby:

With Zuback's strength...................who knows.....??

why would you think that?

Because if she's been working with Brian (who I think we can all agree is a pretty good teacher :) ) for a long time, and she hits it a pretty good way, why wouldn't her hand speed be maxed out already?

And you're not allowed to answer a question with a question! Even though I just did  .

yeah, that's why I'm not a physicist......

You do have a good memory from geometry class but the extra club length and radius wouldn't have to make him release sooner because he has farther to go.....the distance doesn't matter, it's still the same angle. Unless, the added leverage made it difficult for him to overcome the same lag angle from a physical strength standpoint. That shouldn't really be much of a factor though, especially with the ability these days for longer clubs to not be heavier.

Like birdieman mentioned, his canadian idol Jamie Sadlowsiki has the best lag of them all and with a long driver, and he is not strong.

doesn't justify the assumption. he assumed that adding a snap release would increase distance. the snap release led to less distance, suggesting that hand speed decreased. so even if he did have her hand speed maxed out, it slowed down once the change was made. so why not keep the snap release and teach her to increase the hand speed again(albeit a long term solution that may or may not have been worth the time/effort).

Gotcha. I see what you're getting at now.

Heh.....well you've gotta admire a guy who can do that. It's pretty amazing especially at his size.

BTW he's certainly not Zuback strong but he's very strong no doubt. (good hockey player apparently too)
