Michael Phelps - Tumble

Imagine if Hank said, "Ok, Michael, let's start at the green and work backwards. We'll learn to score from all kinds of lies and situations and we'll focus on solid contact. You're super-flexible and strong so we'll take advantage of that and get you hitting it as long as you can within reason. Worst case scenario, you could hit hybrids off the tee far enough to reach everything until you get your driver right."
I woulda shat meself. But instead, we got, 'You gotta shorten your swing. The woods are full of long hitters." oyyy.

I think he asked Phelps what he wanted to work on and what he felt was the weakest part of his game and Phelps responded 'the short game'.

Pretty sure Hank heard him but then decided he didn't just pay someone 20$ an hour to tee those balls up all morning for nothing... and away we go... to the range!

I've come to learn that this show has very little (understatement, I know) to do with playing golf and shooting lower scores and A WHOLE LOT to do with learning Hank Haney's swing method. It's quite a shame too since they typically don't go hand in hand.

But don't you feel like the show rarely goes into detail and slow-motion video showing exactly what elements of the swing they are trying to change?

I feel like there was barely any of that for Ray Romano and Rush Limbaugh.......

I feel like the show should get golfers to lower their scores and increase their confidence as they build trust in their own game.

I'm still waiting...

This show does nothing to help golf teachers, if he goes 0 for 4 with these students, why would anyone risk taking a lesson from someone who isn't famous?

I think the bigger problem is the fact that so many of the best players in the world can't figure out what good instruction is and their games are harmed. After all, that's why Haney is so famous. Tiger made the misjudgment of picking him.

If the best players in the world frequently receive instruction that harms their games, what hope is there for the typical club golfer?

There are some great instructors out there, but knowing what I know now I wouldn't take a lesson from them unless they were on this list (not saying they couldn't help just saying I wouldn't do it):

Senior Instructors:

Michael Finney, Owl Creek Country Club, Louisville, Kentucky
Chris Hamburger, The Cardinal Club, Simpsonville, Kentucky
Tom Bartlett, New Orleans, Louisiana

Elite Instructor:

Michael Jacobs, Rock Hill Country Club, Manorville (Long Island), New York

Master Instructors:
Chris Como, Gleneagles Country Club, Plano, Texas
Damon Lucas, The Institute at Lake Presidential, Upper Marlboro, Maryland
Kevin Shields, Sewickley Heights Golf Club, Sewickley, Pennsylvania
Steve Khatib, Australia

Certified Instructors:

Jon Hardesty, Owl Creek Country Club, Louisville, Kentucky
Phil Rosenbaum, Baltimore, Maryland
Matt Bryda, Eugene, Oregon
Jim Kobylinski, Chicago, Illinois
Steve Greffen, Neptune, New Jersey
Rick Dandy, Annapolis, Maryland
Ryan Smither, Louisville, Kentucky
Billy McKinney, Orange County, California
Richard Franklin, Lake Forest, Illinois

Not even Butch? You'd say "Thanks but no thanks"?

Lifter, we know you now have a thing for the "mini carry". But it's not the cure for everything. If Phelps maintained his width and dint mind playing a cut, a mini carry could help.

I'm sure it's not. If I ran into Phelps having trouble on the range, I'm not sure I could help him. Sure is fun to speculate, though!

Looks like Phelps is improving. Hit a nice 6 iron ~ 180 yards on the green in China. One thing I'm noticing is there's not much info on exactly what they're working on. Just speed up the swing and square the face is all I hear. I think Hank is playing it close to the vest as far as how much info is released in the episodes.

I think Phelps could be a low to mid 80's shooter very easily and very soon.

I think the show has shown that Phelps has a tendency to come over the top and hit the ball in the heel. So Haney's working very hard on shallowing out the swing plane. I imagine that's the right way to go.
