Pros/Cons of a cupped left wrist at the top

rite here we go ...

the clubface is almost always open in the backsing in relation to the plane. for example, a tiger woods top of backswing position were the back of the left hand matches the clubface and the left forearm that is 90* open.

however not everyone looks like this. a 'shut blade' player ie azinger, would have the face LESS OPEN, maybe 45* open.

so whatever position you are in at the top, cupping or arching the left wrist will alter the clubface position relative to the plane.

if you are in a tiger woods, jack nicklaus, sam snead etc ... position at the top ie 90* open and you arch your left wrist, the clubface will become MORE CLOSED, perhaps 60* open. if you cup your left wrist the clubface will become MORE OPEN maybe around 100-110* open.

nw if you are a slicer, you need the face MORE CLOSED, so use twistway to arch the wrist and close the face more. this will help to eliminate the open-face issue.

now, usually in better players, the face can get too closed, making the ball go to the left. one of many options would be too cup the wrist at the top and OPEN the face a little more. this is what hogan did. he altered his grip and cupped his wrist which hd it LESS CLOSED. this allowed him to unroll his left arm as much as he wanted, as much as he always had, but the face was MORE OPEN and he didnt hook it!

it is entirely customisable depending on the pattern, to help alter ball flight.

hope this clears everything up for everyone

OK, Jim. Physical model. Let's say when talking about openess or closeness of the clubface we are talking about its openess or closeness IN RELATION TO THE SWING ARC.
Now, no matter if one has a cupped or bowed left wrist at the top, the clubface is, in a model scenario, always open the same 90* in relation to the arc due to the forearm turn in the second phase of the backswing.
What is different is not the amount of openess, but the angle of the clubface, say, in relation to the ground which can be associated with the change in loft, not in openess.

...or I am missing something :(

Cheers

The clubface can be any amount of degrees open, depending on left forearm rotation that would be X* open and depending on the particular players preference for cupped/flat left wrist that can be Y* open.

To find out how open it is at the top of the backswing you would need to add X + Y to find that number.

I think the deal is......

That open to the downswing plane.....

And open "to the ball".....

Are two different things. Yes?

I hope I have that right...
