The mysteries of gear effect, and some gem comments from the US Open coverage...

The elusive "lean-in-sqeeze-fade"...

And the Piece de Resistance...

Johnny, you're not alone in believing that.

My girlfriend who knows nothing about golf looked at me and said "can you really open the face at impact like that or is that the ball making the face open?"

Thank God im not the only one who Johnny Miller was aggravating yesterday. I turned off the volume about three or four times to rant to my family about how wrong he was. God bless them, they're only interested in golf because of me, but they dutifully listened to my diatribes.

He said some of the stupidest crap I've heard in a while!!

Also, does anyone else remember the "you need to hold the shaftoad and shaft flex into impact instead of letting it go comment."

Ridiculous!!

What I thought was interesting were the high frames per second of the clubface prior to impact. As Brian has stated, there is "no movement" (rate of closure) happening at this time. The clubface is very stable.

I wonder if our scientific friends could furnish the "effective weight" of the ball at impact and how much strength it would take to actually (if you could) turn the clubface either open or closed while the ball is on it. I am betting that no human is strong enough to change the clubface while the "load" of the ball is on it.

I didn't get a chance to watch yesterday. I can "handle" the first two, but that last one....Wow! Although, I guess you can indirectly "control" the clubface opening when the ball is on the face by purposely hitting it on the toe.

Not sure about the strength part, but the 4/1000th of a second that the ball is on the face makes this tough for me.

Maybe, just maybe, all the "knowledge" that Miller lacks really isn't as important as we want to think. If JM is misinformed now, what must he have been like in his prime? Clueless, right? Yet he lit it up and managed to hit all those shots that he now knows nothing about, at least according to many on here.

Maybe, just maybe, all that knowledge JM lacks isn't as important as we want it to be. Just sayin'

I don't think anybody questions his playing record, but it doesn't excuse his silly and incorrect comments. You're right that all that knowledge isn't that important for a PLAYER, but he is not a player anymore.

I want to cut Johnny some slack here, but if you can't enjoy the irony when he says "people say you can't do that" then you're a replicant.

It's the fact that so much mis-information continues to be spread. Yes, he won and won a lot. But saying the same wrong things doesn't help anyone or their game.

What people are missing is that Johnny Miller is a commentator and telling the golfing masses incorrect information. How can the average guy get better if he keeps trying to do things that Johnny says is wrong?

The correct understanding of impact isn't as important as we want it to be? Can you think of anything more important in the swing than impact?

The reason for the thread is to show the effects of off-center strikes, and how poorly those effects are understood.

Furyk hits it a little towards the toe on a shot that goes too far left. Not a single comment is about what can actually cause the ball to go left. Instead it's about eyes, hips, and how low he keeps the head.

Tiger hits a horrible iron shot that barely gets airborne. He hits it high on the face and towards the toe. Painfully obvious on the slow motion shot. Instead of pointing out the cause of the shot, Miller talks about being able to control the face (with the ball still on it) to hit a fade. HE HIT AN EFFIN WORM BURNER, NOT A FADE!

C'mon.

Hey mgran, you implyin we can affect impact just because we know how important it is and how it should be? You Johnny M in disguise? JJ

Remember the better you get the more the game slows down. Tiger's impact interval may have slowed down so much that he is now able to manipulate the face during impact to affect the spin, like in ping pong. Just kidding, I am proud to stand up and say I am one of the people Jmiller said who will say "YOU CAN'T DO THAT".
