Tiger does frustrate me as he is not fulfilling his potential. I know he played well on saturday but as Brian said he is that good he can carry it off. I hope he gets away from Haney soon and finds a teacher who can show us the real Tiger. If he does the rest have no hope unlike now when they have plenty

Cabrera does have a bent left wrist at the top, for whatever that's worth. I like how he's smoking and saying "I hoped they didn't make birdies" just because I like to see the stuffy crowd pretend not to notice.

NBC's golf coverage is pretty terrible in my book. It takes them forever to tell you the yardage and club for each shot. The camera work doesn't show the ball or the hole clearly half the time. And Johnny Miller, Gary Koch, Mark Rolfing, and Maltbie are the most boring, pretentious, know nothing cast a network could possibly come up with. After every shot they make up some bs reason to explain what happened and do it with a pathetic holier than thou attitude. Really annoying. Faldo, Feherty, and McCordwould have made it ten times better.

It was weird to see both Tiger and Furyk blade a pitch shot today.

The Big Break guy caddying provided extra entertainment for me.

Baddely seemed to hit the ball well early on but made no putts at all, then I think he got dejected and gave up. I don't like his flat backswing. It seems weird to me that he takes it back flat and then comes over the top a little and hits a fade. But whatever works I guess. So in putting taking it back really quick from when he looks back to the ball is his technique huh? I think he might do a similar thing in the long game too, seems like he plays pretty quick all around. Also, he looks like a young caveman to me.

I'm old enough to remember Nicklaus in his prime. Tiger today reminds me of Nicklaus in his 30s. Still the best, but not by a wide margin. Nicklaus changed his swing in his 30s and it wasn't quite as reliable, nor was he as long. Tiger is doing the same thing. Nicklaus and Tiger both just had/have the sheer talent to will a great ballstriking round in a major, but in their 30s their putting is just a little bit off from their 20s.

The Pivot

I believe that Roberto DeVincenzo was once asked how he hit the ball - he replied "I hit it with my stomach".

Angel has plenty of stomach to hit it with - no wonder he is so long.

My stomach fits into that mold also, but alas I don't see many 300+ drives anymore (did get one at 302 yesterday- slightly downhill and a light breeze behind).

I believe that Brian used Angel as a model for his 'wedding ring up' position a while back.

On a side note - I think the greens were to 'El Pato's" advantage. No one was going to make a lot of mid range putts due to the combination of speed and alot of break - lots of 'defensive' strokes being made.

On another note - I totally agree that there is a lot of copying going on and I know that I have certainly done more than my share of it. Hopefully my 3 hours last week with Brian and Damon in Baltimore will get my on the road to "my swing". Man that TSP sure feels "high".

Get it right folks...

I never said anything about the S&T being bad—if you have the problem, then that is an antidote.

Bennet and Plummer have done a great job with Aaron—read my swing review on him—but, it is time to adjust. Free up his swing, esp. his finish, and he'll play better.

But, my guess is....they won't.

Redgoat, I am 100% down witcha on Kim. He is the great hope of the next couple Ryder Cups.

Folks, re-read the artcle, I said Tiger in 2000 was superior to 1997. Anyone who says otherwise is a dope. I just said it got worse from there.

Haney: "The 3rd round is what I have been waiting for since I started working with Tiger."

Geez...

If Tiger didn't win by 5 in a couple of months after I'd get him, I'd consider it a huge failure.

Another thing, STOP with the selective naming of teachers and caddies. either say ALL of the names in the same context, or none.

Brian,

I totally hear you on the swings of the respective 4 players you mentioned. I'm curious why exactly you dislike Badds' routines though.

I watched him for nine holes at Forest Oaks about 4 or 5 years ago when he was struggling. He had the same putting routine then that he has now, and he still closed his eyes to visualize his shots then like he does now. He hit the ball like crap, but still shot even par hitting 2 greens.

His putting is amazing. I'm not sure why you'd want to fix something that ain't broken.

And as far as goofy or gimmicky routines go, how about Furyk? Get over the putt, get half a second away from hitting it, and then back off of it? Every time? It obviously works for him, but then again, so does Badds' :).

Brian,
I always like watching these guys swing and with DVR you can really watch what they are doing more closely than ever. However, what should we be looking at in their swings? What can we learn?

INteresting observation on Baddeley from GolfWeek:
"You can see the climb in his results. He won the Verizon Heritage last spring and the FBR Open early this year. And he’s far more consistent now. He has five top-10 finishes in just the first half of this year, almost half of the 11 he produced in 120 previous starts the first seven years this decade.

That said, his mettle and swing and stroke will be tested like never before on Sunday for a couple of reasons. Not only is it the final round of the U.S. Open, he will be playing in the final group with world No. 1 Tiger Woods. He’ll take a two-stroke lead over Woods to the tee and he’ll find out in one afternoon just how far he has improved as a player.

He’ll find out whether he has it or doesn’t now. No one will have to tell him. The results will."

"

Tiger finished 2-2-1-1 in his last four majors.
Perhaps Tiger's swing is fine and maybe it simply is a matter that nobody owns
golf. IMHO tiger gave it away when he duffed two chips on the same hole. Furyk and Tiger are the two best putters on tour.

This really is an important thread. Cabrera clearly had the best swing in the tournament. His Alignments were excellent considering what he was trying to do. Watching him, Furyk and Bubba clearly show what is important in the golf swing. Tiger had a phenomenal swing before Haney. Watching him swing now, it is clear that he has worked himself back towards the rest of the field. Brian is correct with the swing plane, the best players swing at or above the turned shoulder plane. With Baddeley's failure, it will be interesting to see what happens with the stack and tilt pattern.

I wouldnt call it a failure. He three jacked it on the first hole. His putter was the main culprit. The swing worked fine for "him". Its not the right pattern for everone though.

Speaking of the NBC coverage, what is the deal with their crappy cameras? They pay all of this money to air these PGA events and they don't even have an HD camera on the ground following Tiger. Instead some kind of blurry, zoomed camera that looks like crap is following around the best golfer in the world. Great work.

Have you ever watched a Japaneese telecast of golf? Now that is the way to show a golf tournament. They have high speed cameras everywhere and get all kinds of great shots on video.

You seem to blame hank haney for tiger woods supposed bad ball striking (although 1st in greens in regulation at a us open is usually not considered to be 'bad'), but why dont you also blame him for the masterclass in ball striking tiger put on at the 2006 open, 2005 Open 2005 US open (tiger finished 1st in GIR last in Putting) and the 2005 masters.
Logically if haney is responsible for tiger's bad striking he is also responsible for tiger's good striking,
