Breaking through my scoring comfort zone

Performance on the course

On the range you get in the groove hitting shot after shot. The problem on the course is all shots are the first shot, usually after a delay with many mental distractions. So how do you practice the "first shot". On the range don't rake balls to you. Leave them far enough away to have a new grip, new stance and new alignment. That makes them close to a "first shot". We all know that "Bubba" or the mulligan is always better. I am convinced there are tournament and pressure players. We all know those that keep winning in our club tournaments. Scoring is a different talent than ball striking. Also if the sports psych guys didn't produce results the pros wouldn't keep hiring them.

How do you stand over a ball at the range and try to reproduce course pressure? I am very good at hitting a ball, roll a new one up, get behind it, pick out immediate target, mental picture of shot, grip club, practice swing, align, address, waggle and go - my pre shot routine is solid - How can I practice with course pressure?

Create some kind of consequence...maybe if you don't hit the shot you want you punish yourself somehow, put a $1.00 in a golf jar, or stop doing what you just did and hit pitch shots for 5-10 balls to a 30 yard target until you get 5 within 5 feet, JUST SOMETHING.

I was one of the best pressure free throw shooters in all of 6th grade :p, yes i said 6th grade. Wanna know why i was? Because i had a maniac for a coach and he would have us run ladders/suicides if ANYONE on the team missed AND we were TIMED. If everyone didn't finish within that time, off we go AGAIN. I'll tell you one thing, we were so afraid of missing those free throws and running, we had over a 90% free throw percentage during league play and we weren't so afraid when that shot came because we were more afraid missing at practice than we ever were in a game.

if you are happy with your mechanics and want to learn how to hit shots and score, why don't you practice less and play more?

I only practice once a week, usually on Saturday mornings. I play once a week (maybe twice every now and then) - I don't beat balls every day and play once a month - I should really take a lesson to fine tune my driving and 3 wood - I like all of the ideas I have gotten on how to practice and really focus like I need to on the course - thanks everyone
