I live in Columbus, Ohio and therefore a big Nicklaus fan. I believe you can only compare players in any sport against their contemporaries. Tiger more thoroughly dominated his peers than anyone since Byron Nelson or Bobby Jones. Nicklaus was the greatest in his day (mid to late 60s), but not as dominant as Tiger was in the early 2000s. Now if Jack had Trevino's short irons and short game.....

THE GUY (MICKELSON) THAT IS HIS PRIMARY RIVAL,THE ONLY GUY WHO'S EVEN CLOSE IN TERMS OF PURE TALENT AND PEDIGREE, ACKNOWLEDGED THAT TIGER WAS WINNING DESPITE HIS EQUIPMENT (SMALL HEADED DRIVER AND 3 WOOD, STEEL SHAFTS IN BOTH)

???

Or maybe that is from the link....?

Folks....this is the last word on this.

Mac is a smart guy, a SHREWD marketer, and a little nutty. For all his supposed ball striking prowess, Tiger can give him 2 a side.

You may like Tiger, or you may not, but he is the ONLY guy EVER, who could do it all. Here is my elimination argument.

STEP 1: Take everyone on the planet—ever—who could stripe it on the range, hit all the shots, chip and putt like a demon on the practice green.
(approx. 100,000 golfers)

STEP 2: Have to have won 1 PGA TOUR event (100's and 100's)

STEP 3: Has to have won a Major (dozens and dozens)

STEP 4: Go to a hole with a 300 yard carry, at SEA LEVEL, if you don't make it across on you first ball, you are out. (3 dozen tops)

STEP 5: Go to a firm shallow green, like 17 at Pebble. Go back to 230 yards (modern equipment), have 'em hit 10 balls. If one ball is short, you are out, and you have to fly it on and hit the green with 6 balls min. (12 or less)

STEP 6: Go to a tricky elevated green. like one at Winged Foot. Place 10 balls in all sorts of places—bunkers, high rough, downhill green running away, under the lip, etc. You have to get 7 out of 10 up and down, three straight times. (5 or less)

STEP 7: Go to the recently redisigned #8 green at Valhalla Golf Club (site of the 2008 Ryder Cup). Put a hole on each mini-level (about 4 of them) and make a 10 hole putting course going every which way. You have to score 20 or less, two times out of three. (2 golfers max.)

STEP 8: Go to #15 and #16 at Cypress Point. With 10 shots on each hole, you have to get a total of 6 shots inside 10 feet, with at least 1 being on #16, but...you have to finish all the balls and shoot at least 10 under. You have 10 chances. (Tiger wins, but it was probably over a few STEPS ago)

Listen, the fact that you think the number two player in the WORLD isn't the only guy competing against Tiger is irrelevant. Duh. The whole damn tour is loaded with talent--top to bottom. Mickelson is the number two player in the world and widely acknoledged to be Tiger's main competitor.

The fact that this guy pays such a testament to Tiger's ability, saying that he was winning without the latest technology, automatically disqualifies what cranky Mac said. It's also deserving of acknolwedgement from you or anyone else with a brain that princeunderpar's post is dead on.

GET REAL.

I am confused. Are you talking to me lia?

BTW whether you were or not....you said: "THE ONLY GUY WHO'S EVEN CLOSE IN TERMS OF PURE TALENT AND PEDIGREE."

I think that is up for debate, Mr. Matlock.

Birdie, please state YOUR conclusion regarding this thread.

There's a lot to comment on by now I guess if I was to comment on the entire thread. Not sure exactly whatcha want outta me (that prolly is bad wording tho cause I don't think ur interrogating me yet or such) although I guess if I talk about what the thread was originally about......I think I posted in here early on......

.........and basically Mac of course is way full of it with his comments on Tiger.

I am not a fan of Eldrick even (to bring it up again) but it is pretty dang obvious to me.

BTW one related thing that comes to mind: I just read that Mac also said at some PGA Summit (I'm sure Brian would know cause he's been to all of em) Snead was the only one who could hit the 9 different ballflights or something?? (says a book on Sam Snead) Well la dee da (Mr. Frenchman)..........man......I can even hit <low/mid/high> + <draw/fade/straight>.

If you want Jack to beat Tiger, you grow the rough to 99 Carnoustie and make the course long enough that Tiger has to hit driver. You want Tiger to win you mow. Don't you think either would learn to chip (Jack) or drive (Tiger) if they had to play each other. They both won a bunch because their opponents folded, mostly Tiger. There would be some pretty good golf with both guys getting it done down the stretch.

Your contest--10 balls here--not golf.

You are discounting Tigers ability to zip a long iron 285-95 yards dead straight.

Hogan's ball striking accuracy; his distance; his mental game...I wouldn't say Tiger would win 10 out of 10...how much better would Hogan have been with better equipment; better greens; a longer ball...and a ball that rolled better?

I still say TW is better but I'd put Hogan in front of Phil...and that means Hogan would have beat TW now and then. Especially on Open courses.

And I think Nicklaus would have beat TW now and then "all else being equal".
Yes, overall I give the edge to TW...but as Hogan said himself "everything is better today"! People are taller, bigger for starters. Imagine Hogan at 6 ft. or whaterver...all you can do is be the best of your generation.

Being the "best of all time" is an oxymoron as long as golf contiunes to be played.

um...by "Hogan's distance" I meant what it would be with the equipment of today. His swing speed was probably close to TW. Not bad for a smoker. No doubt he would have been more fit in today's competitive golf environment...all we can do is speculate at how such a highly motivated individual would have improved in all areas.

Now that's just plain silly. Tiger does not hit irons 285 plus--except downwind on a very fast/hard fairway as in the British...come on let's have some strive for accuracy here.
