Rick Reilly on Tiger

no this issue is when he hits one 3 fws over and he yells GD IT TIGER with all the kids around........I put Tiger in the same catagory as Ray "the thug" Lewis.......if he keeps disgracing the game then he needs to be fined.

Tiger is also not a role model for this reason as well, he has too many kids around watching him play to be dropping GD and F bombs on the tee box. I respect Tigers game, but not him as a person for this reason. GREAT Article.

of course we the fans could stop this by not showing up to watch him, and noone is going to do that either. Just another way our morals and ethics have slipped as a country.

Anger is not a role model. Either you have the fire or not. If it helps you play better, like Tiger so be it. Most golfers play much better when they don't lose it. I allow myself ten seconds of being pissed, then its on to the next shot. Hogan and Snead both were known to bury clubs. I saw Charles Coody, a quiet guy, bury a four iron up to the hosel after a poor shot at the Kemper Open. His caddy had to dig it out. Everyone is not Fuzzy Zoeller. Tiger just gets watched more than anyone. Freddy C lets loose with the fbomb too. Reilly is wrong on this. I love watching guys like Perez or Austin meltdown.

You are certainly entitled to like or dislike anyone you choose. However, to say that tiger is bad for golf, or children, or society is dishonest. The one cause he appears to be incredibly passionate about outside of golf is the welfare of children. He has invested many millions of dollars in different areas of the world, and is actively involved with several different organizations that work to improve the lives of children.

Tiger has a responsibility to be a decent contributing member of society (as we all do). I don't give him or any other professional athlete the responsibility to teach me or my children moral, ethical or political values. Their responsibility as athletes is to entertain us with their performances. If we take inspiration from them in some way, then that's a nice bonus. If they choose to step outside of their chosen sport and endorse a moral, ethical or political cause, then they can be judged on that separately.

Unfortunately, when one is in the limelight as Tiger is, he held to different standards. And Tiger might be one of the most influential humans walking on the planet. When Tiger talks golf or not, we listen. The subliminal programming we humans have is very powerful.

The person who asked, "would Tiger let or be proud of his own children if they behaved this way" has the right question. If Tiger can answer that question 'Yes' than it's end of story. If he answers it 'No', than a change should come.

I'd be willing to go out on a limb and say, generally speaking, those with young children are opposed to Tiger's behavior and those with no children are not.

Your statements are correct in many ways. I would however place the responsibility on us individually to filter out who we choose as our moral influence.
Some of us are way too quick to buy into the ideas that the media sells ... in Tigers case the pitch goes "This guy can usually score lower on a golf course than anyone in the entire world, therefore he is incredibly important to your life as a whole, and you should hold him to incredibly high standards. You should want to eat what he eats, wear what he wears, act as he acts, use the products he endorses, etc."

The way I see it, he is just some guy who is exceptionally good at golf. And myself being a lover of good golf, I find him very entertaining. athletes are like any other cross section of society though, you will find the good, the bad, and the ugly.

I'd also say that those with young children have let an f-bomb or slammed a club a time or seven while playing with their child(ren).

Comparing Tiger to Ray Lewis is beyond ridiculous. Why don't we compare him to Ted Bundy while we are at it.

A NIKE commercial with Tiger apologizing for his on course behavior and from now on would make a concerted effort to act like he would like his children to act would be one big hit of a commercial. Kinda like a super hero role model. Could be very powerful throughout the world of junior golf and beyond.

And put himself even more under the microscope? No way! That would be a PR disaster just waiting to happen.
We must stop looking to athletes (or any other entertainer for that matter) to be our kids' moral compass. We certainly can highlight his dedication and work ethic (and how it may translate to success in a chosen field), but in the end he is only an athlete. As BM might say ... the rest is just showbiz.

My dad is a mechanic and when he screws up (either a "mental" screw up, or a physical "knucklebuster" screw up), he would let out a few choice words. Hey, its human to release the anger through curse words. I also respect anyone who can control themselves to NOT let out those words. As Marge Simpson once said... "BFD".

That said, Rick Reilly must either expect near perfection from the people he says on TV, or is catering to the segment of the population that expects near perfection from the people they see on TV...

Al Bundy, more like. :D

Give TW a break - he is under more pressure internally and externally than any athlete on the planet! The poor guy probably can't even go out to dinner wihtout being hounded by fans and paparazi. This type of behavior is normal in Hollywood land!

Tiger knows he is scrutinized, knows he is on television and he knows he is more than the golf ambassador to the world. He must mind his p's and q's...

I think you're missing the point. It's how the parent would feel when their child did it. I guarantee it would be guilt.

no... cause the NFL let that kinda of crap go on for the money.......not too long the PGA will do the same thing.....you watch.

I get tired of hearing the "tiger demands perfection" then show us this with ACTIONS, be a perfect model. I also get tired of hearing ...."his so good and cares about the kids"...then don't let them hear the filth come out of your mouth. But I guess this is ok too since he builds a computer lab?
In fact let's just add F, GD, S, MF"ER, and cock sucker to the First Tee booklets so the kids can can get off on the right foot........in fact we will go ahead and have porn hour after lunch too.

Golf is a gentleman's game....Tiger is no gentelman while on the golf course.

X2 X2 X2!!!!!!!!!!

Uhhh... Ray Lewis, aside from his excessive dancing, taunting, and celebrations for routine plays, tried to hide evidence in a murder investigation of his two freinds... He is not a good guy. The NFL is full of behavior and people that I dont care to root for. Hey, the NFL set a new record of 33 days without a player being arrested. 33 DAYS!!! The NFL gets a free pass in this country because the sport is popular.

Golf is a completely different ball of wax, different history, different things are valued, and one guy cursing and slamming his clubs wont hurt the game...Tiger Woods and Ray Lewis have one thing in common though... and lets not go there.

I think it does hurt the game since he is the poster child for all things golf right now..............of course we can't call anyone out on it cause then we would be a racist bigot........I went there so you would it have to.
