The most ridiculous advice you've heard

I was hitting the ball a little heavy and needed a quick lesson before a tournament. Scheduled a lesson with a PGA certified instructor with a great reputation in St Louis. His $100 advice...."try to hit the ball thin"

Ball Flight Laws

The worst has got to be the establishment and propagation of the "old" ball flight laws. I used to believe those came down the mountain with Moses and they were based on observation and measurement. When it comes to diagnosing a swing flaw I can't think of a lot that's more important than path and face. "They" told us how it worked. And it was all completely wrong.

"Slow down", lilke it is the cure for all golfing ills. I hate that with a passion. It also drives me nuts when they use Ernie as an example of a "nice, slow tempo". Ernie's move looks smooth, but his speed isn't slow, and neither is his tempo.

Nick Price is always the counter to the 'slow down' argument. IMO, it's really about downswing sequencing so slow down does have some tiny merit, but for me it's really 'get into the proper sequence.'

Huh?

I used to take lessons from whom I think was a Haney disciple - take it outside and when you feel the stretch, just turn your shoulders like crazy. He actually taught Bobby Clampett and Rick Fehr for awhile, amongst some other Wisconsin pros.

I was snap hooking the snot out of it right before our HS Conference tournament - went to the range to see if he could give me a quick 15 minute look - after 5 snap hooks he took my right hand and move it a bit more on top and said "Now try" - hooked 5 more - after each one the advice was "Closer" ... Snap Hook ... "Closer" - After the 5th one I said, "Closer to what?!?" - unless he meant my balls were finishing closer to the fence on the left side of the range - closer my arse - I'm closer to stickin' this driver up your arse!

This wasn't so much bad advice as no advice...

If you have a flat left wrist, and swing 45 degrees out to the right the kingdom of golf will be yours

Oh...you can't get anything lofted lower than a 7 iron in the air?? Well then you just need to flatten the lie on your clubs 8 degrees....

Just take one puff, you don't have to inhale. Oh yeah, golf advice, don't lift your head, you won't like what you'll see.

ironically some of the things in this thread have some merit...i won't say which but some of it does apply if done correctly for the right reason.

however i do understand that in most cases, the things i am referring too weren't going to be used in the same idea i am.

Crazy is what crazy does

"Finish the swing!"........like anyone can swing and not finish!

For Instuctors out there, how about some of the craziest things you have heard a "student" say?

I'll start

1. Is this my left hand?
2. What do you mean by move the ball back in my stance?
3. I want to be more consistent but I don't play alot.
4. My lessons aren't working.....did you practice asked the instructor?.....No, I don't have time to.
5. I'm afraid to ruin the grass.

Tiger Woods swings the club by moving his right shoulder up around his neck and that's how you should swing too.

Someone gave me a David Leadbetter book as a present in 1996. In it, he said that at impact you should return to your address position. Sigh.

That seems odd, Leadbetter is one of the biggest exponents of opening your body and hips through impact. Perhaps it was mis-worded.

RodgerDodger:

Never had the pre-set right hip, at least that I remember, although it was when I was back in High School and early college (now 37). I think "Rassie" is still teaching though - just do not know who is on his client list right now...

Student List:

Do you want to see me hit a few?
Should I get my clubs checked?

Not something they say, but something they do. I am often helping a newer student with the concept of taking the "whole" club back to start the swing. So I ask them to take their stance, then I step in and grab the shaft so that I will be in control of the club. They ALWAYS let go of the club.
