Hogan's head moves to his right (away from the target) about 1-2 inches from his recoil of the forward press to about the first 12 inches of his clubhead going back.

It is interesting to note how his shadow moves fwd in the downswing. The shadow looks at least two balls further fwd than at the top of the backswing

Is it the camera angle OR...

Am I seeing that Hogan sets up with his shoudlers quite a bit open and his hips open also (although less so...) - Why does he do this and what "dynamics" did it create in his swing? Looks like film sequence from the '56 Open.

MEH I posted the video where Hogan said that he knew that his post-accident swing wasn't any good.

Is this the one?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPH0UVF6Hhc

Where does he say "he knew that his post-accident swing wasn't any good"?

Towards the end of the video, he says that he knew he "didn't have the best swing in the world", and that he had to outwork his peers, but that was early in his career (he goes on to say that after he won a couple of tournaments, he noticed that the other pros were practicing more to keep up with him).

As far as he post-accident swing or ballstriking, he doesn't say anything. He said he never "played" as well after the accident as in late 1948/early '49, but "playing" encompasses much more than ballstriking.

What's better?

Hopefully, this will end this debate for all times.

There's ball-striking, as is hit the $HI% out of the ball, mash it, trap it, don't let it breathe, make noise as it cuts though the wind, with pretty ball-flight.

That's the stuff folks talk about when they say Mac O'Grady is great ball-striker, or Mike Finney, or Tom Bartlett. Just beat on it.

And then there is Juli Inkster ball-striking. She just POLISHES THE BALL. But she can give me two a side. David Toms fall into this category. Hitting it where you are looking. Johnny Miler-style.

But Brian....Hogan could still trap it/mash it after the wreck, couldn't he?

Sure, but it just wasn't as DYNAMIC.

So, which one do I prefer?

I like 'em both, but probably, at the end of the day, I like his AFTER WRECK downswing better, his AFTER WRECK grip and set-up better, and his AFTER WRECK fade better.

But he hit it HARDER before the wreck.

There is one one member of this forum who ever got a lesson from Mr. Hogan, Brent White (Woody-B-Dub).

Ben Doyle loves to tell the story. Hogan's "big advice" to Brent was:

Harder!

Harder!

Harder!

Harder!

Harder!!!

As long as there are old farts like me hanging around, the debate will never end.

If I were Hogan (actually I am), I would say the same. Most of us, as fierce competitors would do the same. "When I was in my prime" or "before that injury" I could do this and that.

It is what it is. If it were not for the accident, Hogan would not have reinvented himself and the mystique may have never existed.

that video was in the 'mini video archive' in the archives section of the forum.
brian drew the lines and said it was pre-wreck

I think he may be mistaken; since I am similarly follicly-challenged, I'm familiar with the rate of hair loss, and I don't believe Hogan could have lost that much hair between the time of the Power Golf-sequence (published in April 1948) and the accident (February 1949). More to the point, photos of Hogan right after the accident show a full head of hair (for example, see page 233 of Ben Hogan: An American Life). His balding patches in the "grid" video look '53 vintage to me.

Here is a photo dated 1949, the year of the wreck:

Here is one dated 1954:
