Needs to????

Doesn't NEED TO do anything on the backswing.

You are simply getting the MACHINE ready and in position for the first move down—which is something to think about.

When you are cross the line—so to speak—there is MORE TO LOAD.

;)

So you won't fix someone who's shaft is pointing WAY to the right/left of target at the first parallel in the backswing? I thought you teach a golf-like or ORTHODOX swing

Plane Line

I believe that I have 'tried' (ugly word) to be too precise in the backswing instead of just taking it back to a point at the top/end where I can then drive the shaft down the plane (any plane between TSP and EP) with the shaft pointing at the plane line.

More of a hitters move...at the end of the day, you gotta retrace it back to your desired plane line...and that costs energy...

Yeah, just make sure it looks roughly right...flat left wrist and not some crazy shaft positions...

Denny,

Doesn't Mac advocate different lines—at least of the left arm—on the backswing?
Not sure what you mean with different lines.
He is not a one ball position guy.
I believe he likes 45 degrees with driver and 22 degrees with sandwedge. That's the left arm angle.

Hitters Move???

Totally disagree.

PLENTY OF SWINGING on the TOUR who cross the line.

I don't like it much, but I know WHY it CAN work.

Hmmm....

More AXIS TILT with a driver....

So, deeper right shoulder....

....

I haven't thought about it, but the answer may be the DRIVER.
That was Homer's answer.

Well, of course if you swing like John Daly and go well past parallel, then it's ok to be cross line so to speak.

Explain why GOOSEN is more cross line than GARCIA (both swingers).

Explain why Tiger has gone from cross line in '97 to laid off/basically perfect now.

If someone is very cross line with their shaft, it is very likely their elbow at the top is loaded for primary lever...rather than secondary...i.e. loading for hitting
Under-rotation of wrist...more like single wrist action...ala Nicklaus...gotta compensate in downswing.....not saying you should change someone who's playing well doing that

IMO there's nothing wrong with an underplane backswing....but personally i don't like it for high handicaps.

The more on plane the backswing the better imo, sets up the entire downswing. And when i mean "on plane backswing" i just mean have either the sweet spot or the butt end of the club point at the plane line. I don't care what plane you use to do it.

Trust me, Bruce, you are DEAD ON!

Guys...I think sometimes too much emphasis is put on what the shaft does...think more about the path of your HANDS...fix that first...good example is jim furyk
