Found this video that shows the three long-drive finalists in 2008: they all are doing it!

Bonus at the very end is Ben Hogan hitting his wayward drive on the final hole of the 1955 US Open playoff when his right foot slipped.

Who should use this move?

Who should use this move?

Probably almost everyone to some extent.

What is different about this move than has been previously taught?

The simple fact of the height of the left shoulder on the downswing—at various points—and how it relates to having MORE forward lean with LESS downward attack, is VERY DIFFERENT than "pop" golf instruction, or "old school" golf instruction.

Got the 7 iron swing yet?

Brain,

Are you saying that this sequence of movements will cause more lag in the swing? Or is that something else. All of the players you have shown have huge amounts of lag in the swing- like Sergio. I feel that I have to jump up in the downswing to make room for the club to expand. Is that a correct idea? Thanks for the time.

Irons vs Woods

Brian:

How do you reconcile hitting down with irons and up with the driver with this swing procedure?

OR, is it just a matter of ball position?

Brian,

Was this "nameless" pattern you were experimenting with when we did the playing lesson Thursday?

B,

Any more news/progress on this?? How's the swing comin'? BTW..If I get the timing right and don't get too far underplane doing this, it's stupid how far I hit it with the driver.

Brian,

This movement pattern you are referring to is exactly what Dr. Scott Lephart from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has been discovering with many of the Tour stars he has tested with their pressure plates and 3D. He actually has found that many top players initially move into the left side beyond the original point and then actually shift BACKWARD just prior to impact and then the momentum of the club moving past themselves causes them to "finish" the weight onto the front side.

The weight actually stutters slightly from right side at the top to left to slightly back and then back forward. I think there is some evidence young Mr. McIlroy does something very similar.

This vid of Davis Love looks just like what you're talking about:
